Most of you will say that the succesor to eMule is BitTorrent as it is the most widely used P2P network today, but there are some things that BitTorrent lacks and eMule provides. The most notorious for me are the following:

  • Built-in network-wide search
  • Easy sharing
  • Unique links

Maybe you don't consider this features important, but the fact is that with the approach BitTorrent takes, we are highly dependent on central points that make the network vulnerable. With BitTorrent we depend on trackers and link listing websites to share content. A torrent client is useless on its own if we don't have a link listing site to get torrents or magnet-links from. On the other side, with the built-in search eMule provides, one can start downloading without the need for a website to take links from.

Easy sharing is also very important, because it provides more peers to download files from. This is specially important on rare files, because with torrents the seeds to download a file can become scattered between different torrents and there can be 5 different torrents seeding the same data, yet they don't share peers. It is clear that one torrent with multiple seeds is preferred that multiple torrents with one seed each, for example.

When there is one single way to identify a file on the network (like with ed2k hashlinks) even the less tech-savvy users are able to contribute. Sharing on eMule is as simple as dropping the file you want to share on your incoming folder (even if it is not the optimal way to do it). In BitTorrent, you must download an existing torrent file or magnet link, stop the download, replace the half downloaded files with the ones you already had downloaded, making sure that you use the same directory structure and filenames that are defined in the torrent, recheck the torrent and start it, all this in order to share files you had downloaded previously. Tell a noob user to do that to help you download some rare file...

And now imagine that you have an entire drive full of sharing material, but the directory structure and filenames differ from the ones used on the torrents (because you like to keep things ordered in your hard drive). This scenario makes it impossible to share those files on the torrent network without creating brand new torrents, so you can't contribute and be one more seed on already existing torrents.

Why not use eMule then? Because it's slow, inneficient, and there is practically only one client that is no longer actively developed. Searching for alternatives, the most similar program that has various clients and is multiplatform is Direct Connect, but it is not decentralized, and different servers don't communicate with each other, so peers for the same file are not shared globally and instead are scattered around different hubs

Is there really no other program that works the way eMule does? Is there no true spiritual succesor to eMule nowadays?

Hello, fellow linux ISO enjoyers,

as you may know, Mullvad VPN is disabling port forwarding 1st of July, which is a pity if you are serious about building that ratio.

Are there any other fast torrent-friendly vpn's with the ability to port forward and ideally ipv6? I have quite a number of torrents in my seedbox and was pretty happy with Mullvad since I was consistently able to squeeze around 800Mbps symmetrical from it, however it's time to move on.

Short rationale:
• You already have a seedbox, why bother with VPN?
Dealing with DMCA is pain and any hosting, which is sending complaints to /dev/null, has insane hardware prices for more demanding users. My seedbox is serving as a media archive since I seed everything I have indefinitely.

• You won't get complaints if you're using private trackers
Entry-level trackers are not bulletproof, I'm still using TL a lot and really, really don't want to move 10's of TB's of shit if asked.

Long story short: VPN works. The question is - which one?

So I've been getting into a certain tabletop wargame that will remain unnamed for rule 3, and am looking for sourcebooks on DDL sites. I've exhausted z-lib and most of the megathread, and can't find anything that is relevant to the game at the moment anywhere I can find, so I thought I'd ask if you knew of any other places to find such books, as I want to exhaust my DDL options before I go to torrenting. If I do have to go to torrenting, would thetrove's stickied torrent be my best option? Thanks. ps- let me know if I can say the game within rule 3.

Incredible growth. just goes to show how little we needed to be in Reddit.

So I have built a Plex Media Server:

CPU: AMD® Ryzen 7 3800x 8-core processor × 16

RAM: Corsair Vengence 32GB 3200MHZ

GPU: NVIDIA EVGA RTX 2080TI

STORAGE: I used to mine Chia which was a proof of storage coin so I have about 200TB of HDDs (18 Drives) all connected to a SAS card.

NETWORK: I have Verizon fios 1gigabit connection

SOFTWARE: Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS (Running all Plex-related apps in a Docker container)

What is the problem:

So everything is setup such as Plex, Heimdall, *arr apps, etc. I have also edited my compose file to enable HW encoding for plex and paid for plex pass and enabled in-app the HW encoding feature. But when it comes to playing content, it does not do so with much ease for users connecting remotely from another state. It seems their stream connection is either poor or having issues when trying to run 4K REMIX files on their NVIDIA Shield Pro. And when I try to watch the content on my TV with my Shield, it is slow to skip ahead and sometimes buffers. My upload speed is around 300 Mbps so I am unsure as to what I am doing wrong and I fear that HW encoding isn't actually happening. I am down to share any files that may be needed but I am unsure as to what might share private info so I have refrained from doing so as of now. From my understanding, my system is fully capable of streaming at least 2-3 4K streams at once, but it can barely handle 1. The sole purpose of this server is to provide content for my entire family around the country. Any advice would be great. Thank you!

I am looking to save all the music I like on hardisks due to the recent closure of rarbg which was a wake up call "unless you save it you don't own it". So if anyone knows a way to download playlists instead of each single song I will be thankful!

i was just wondering if anyone has found a new home since RARBG's departure..

someone pointed out this site to me, which looks interesting because you can search by imdb number: rarbg2.to

it looks different that all the fake RARBG knock-offs..

TorrentLeech has opened its doors, but the seeding requirements are brutal..

Hey all, super happy to see Lemmy picking up. How do you do your screen caps? What software/settings/GPU do you use to get a good result?

I feel like you can get pretty decent results but I want to make sure I'm doing it right.

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone was able to reshare the content, specifically the guides on how to unlock/remove protections from PDFs from this old reddit thread:

I unfortunately cannot access it due to the subreddit going dark (which I am all for!)

New user, sorry for mistakes.

To put it simply, my college doesn’t block any websites for free speech and all that, and they don’t block piracy websites, such as AnimeKaizoku. But on the odd chance I’ll get a DMCA or a notice, the college will receive it as they manage the internet, and they’ll probably shit on me, someone before me (I think) got their WiFi revoked for a bit, which isn’t ideal for me.

So is there any chance of being DMCA’d downloading from websites like AnimeKaizoku?

And if there is a chance is there any way to avoid it?

Thanks!

TL;DR College internet doesn’t block DDL piracy websites, but if I get DMCA’d or get some kind of notice I’ll probably be shit on.

hi - I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good public site for indie games downloads? Something that is not riddled by IGG-games releases but still has all the small/indie titles, ideally with updates/patches.

I used to use rarbg and now I'm a bit at loss and cs.rin is not the best way to find out which new titles came out or got updates. Can you point me in the right direction?

Ahoy guys,

I recently went to DL a TV show and found that ALL of its torrents had been abandoned, so I bought the DVDs, ripped them, and made my own. (Uploaded to a super old PB acc I had). It's been downloaded a few hundred times off my seeding alone. I got the torrent thrill and was thinking about doing this more.

With fake torrents & impersonation being a thing, my first thought was to sign my files/releases/messages with a PGP, however, I can't think of a single time I've seen this happen in the wild. Does this go against a rule? Is it accepted that nobody would ever check so why do it? It seems like a really simple step that would make things easier for everyone.

Very curious if anyone has any input, thanks.

Today I encountered a nagging screen from AutoCAD 2018 telling me that my AutoCAD license is invalid. It appears every few minutes. You can close it and continue using the software freely but the nagging dialog is getting annoying.

I downloaded it from rutracker years ago. No nagging screen appeared until today.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? I already added a rule in the Firewall settings to block connections.

Apologies if my wordings are bad, English is not my native language. Also, I'm not savvy about these stuff so please bear with me, thank you.

EDIT: added the version of AutoCAD to the title and body.

The original /r/piracy was purposefully gimped because Reddit received DMCAs for any random thing and didn't even bother to follow up. Since we're in new waters, I want things to be a bit more relaxed, but there's a limit on how relaxed we can be, without starting to get lawsuits, which I will not be able to fight off. I also host other communities and interests which might cause me headaches.

Remember, this is a hobby project (and none of you scurvy dogs are donating) :D

So here are some piracy-related ground rules for he whole of lemmy.dbzer0.com as of today

  1. No direct links. This means anything which would make Nintendo or Disney light my ass on fire. I am not going to ban you for it (unless you start doing this on purpose), but I will ask admins and mods to remove them.
  2. You can link to websites pages related to piracy. Linking to websites linking to your content (not with a 301 redirect, before you ask) is OK. In general try to keep one degree of separation between our collective groins and your links.
  3. Magnet Links and links to Torrent files are OK, unless we start getting into trouble for it.
  4. /c/piracy has its own, more restrictive rules. Follow them first when they differ from what I post here! /c/piracy is for generic discussion, I don't want it to turn into a link repository full of beggars, got it?
  5. These rules apply to all pirate communities in lemmy.dbzer0.com. Unless that community has more restrictive rules from its own mods. I can easily get a lawsuit because you start making a nintendo ROM link repository.
  6. You can still post direct links elsewhere: If you want a place to post direct links, I suggest you use a community on a server setup to handle this. This requires some significant investment in anonymity and hosting provider (these providers are 3x as expensive, yo!). You can still subscribe and share from those communities with your account in lemmy.dbzer0.com, which can serve as your "port of safety" as those lemmies could be taken down due to those links. If that happens, this safer community will still be up.

All in all, this lemmy is supposed to be Pirate-allied, but not a direct link repository. I literally cannot handle that legal risk at the moment. I hope you all understand the realities of our situation. As much as we can argue that a link to a file is not infringing, the Cartel's legal fund is bottomless, and all I have is a tinsy-tiny treasure chest under my birdbath.

If any pirate communites need to migrate after this, I understand. I would still suggest you keep them around as the "safe" community, and post your link aggregation on a lemmy instance which can handle the eye of sauron. This way you get both a stable community and account, and your links via fediverse. Win-win.

So I'm searching for another website (other than kemono) that bypasses/hosts dumped paywalled websites (patreon, etc), can anyone recommend a similar websites to kemono (just in case kemono went under)

New joiner carry over from r/piracy. Joined that community just before the protest went live and thanks to this community was able to find MANY alternatives. So my way of giving back. I have checked gowatchseries tv every few days to come back to the 'cache' errors that we all know and love. Today I was able to go to the main page and tried out a few links and searches. It is 'partially' back. In that some series in general or some 'episodes' of some seasons of shows are still doing the 'cache'. I have seen this happen with watchserieshd when it was active. Partially working and such before 'the forever lost'.

My suggestion is to quick as you can collect URLs of each episode of shows you watch / movies and store them in a notepad. Some days some of them will work. Other days, other URLs will work instead. The site is good for its multiple download links and subs to download (to go through faster). Do what you can as quickly as possible before we lose ANOTHER great site.

-edit- seems like the homepage is buggy. add " search.html? " at the end of the home page URL will bring you over to the search area which is working for me at this time.
