My girlfriend got an Abmahnung from Frommer Legal yesterday. Unfortunately her name is on the internet account and she is very law abiding and worried by it. I'm Canadian and the most I've ever gotten has been a threatening letter from an ISP in Canada. Obviously, I didn't know torrenting was so persecuted in Germany or else I would have been more vigilant with a VPN. Anyway , the Abmahnung is representing Warner Brothers and wants me to pay 1000€ for seeding 2 episodes of an HBO show. I contacted one of the many defense firms that specialize against these lawsuits but their fee is 30% of what I save of the "fine". So the combined minimum(fine and lawyer fee) I could possibly pay with them is 300€. My girlfriend has proof that she wasn't home that day (a hostel booking from Berlin) but even so the whole thing (Frommel and the defense firms) seems like the epitome of lawful evil to me and I'd rather not support it. They are both just lawyers preying on people foolish enough to not use VPNs with scare tactics. We are planning to move in 6 months anyway (elsewhere in Germany). I did read that these firms generally do (or at least sometimes) sue you in court if you ignore the warnings. I read a couple anecdotes from people that got sued just before 3 years ran out after the first Abmahnung. Can they even sue us if they don't have our new address? What should I do? Suck it up and pay the defense firm or ignore it?

As far as I understand if any fediverse instance decided to start having magnet links and stuff like that, eventually it would be taken down by DCMA notices and the like. But what could be done so a community like that could thrive?

Some questions:

1. Would other instances that federate with it get in trouble? They can always feign ignorance.
2. Could an intance which holds magnet links and trackers be backed up every day, so that as soon as one instance is taken down another one takes it's place immediately?
3. Could an instance be owned annonymously? Can you register a domain and keep a server running somewhere without repercussions?
4. Could a lemmy instance live in an onion domain, and still interact with the rest of the fediverse? Would that improve anything regarding the instance being taken down?
5. What about running instances in countries that do not enforce piracy laws? Could someone in some random country that does not care maintain an instance, which all of the fediverse can access/comment/contribute?

I searched for ages for a replacement of something like torrentz, and the rarbg drop made me start the search again. I ended up trying the included search in qbittorrent, and I'm very happy with the results, it scans many public trackers, and I have always found what I wanted.

As the title suggests, do you guys have any recommended websites to get movies safely?

I recently got an Android TV and went straight to putting Stremio + RDB + Torrentio on it. I've really been liking it but I don't have a way of getting quality PPV events. I don't mind coughing up some money for a good IPTV (if necessary) but I just want reliable HD streams with little to no buffering. I know about the Web Video Caster app which I used to stream from my phone browser but those websites crash/buffer a lot and can be unreliable. Can anyone help me out?

After a year of having a totally useless free subscription to Peacock thanks to my cable internet provider, I am being cut off this month. Of course, a new show is coming on in a couple of months that I would like to watch. Any good sources for that kind of content? It's not a popular TV series or a movie, so I'm not sure where to hunt. Hasn't been released yet but I would like to be ready.

I am pretty new to pirating streaming content. Back in the day, I mainly used napster/frostwire/limewire/torrent clients to download video files, and then watch them locally. I'm open to other options though.

Is this possible anymore if you have a paid account or have they locked it down pretty well?

One of the really clutch features streaming sites have is an audio description track for shows that either aired with it or sometimes they have their own done specifically for streaming. I can't find any encoders that rip those tracks. Does anyone on any site do it?

Up till now most of the videos I've watched have just been unlisted youtube videos. I found that some of the older videos seem to have been uploaded directly to patreon. On clicking the link I get a couple of links. Tried them all out, all say expired signature. Is there no way to get the videos?
