(Disclaimer: yes, I bought a $180 4TB Crucial SSD too, but my family split the cost with me since they're going to use my Jellyfin server. Whether that counts towards the final cost is up to you. And the electricity cost is pretty negligible to run a Le Potato as a server, but I guess you can count that too.)

So this all started rather innocently. I was fed up with all the ads being shoved in my face with everything I do, so I finally decided that it was time to set up a Pi-hole on a single board computer. For me, it ended up being a Le Potato. I had never even touched Linux prior to this, so it took me a day or so to get everything set up. I love learning new things so I kind of got hooked on learning my way around Linux basics and decided that I was going to upgrade my setup to a Pi-hole + VPN using wireguard. That was kind of a beast to configure as a novice but I got that to work after about a week. Now I was getting ad free content anywhere I wanted on my phone. I rode that high for a few weeks until I realized that I was just scratching the surface of what I could do with my little $30 Linux server setup and this is where I really got to upgrade.

I had learned of Jellyfin from LTT and decided that I was going to test it out. I set up the Jellyfin server on the Le Potato and I was off to the races. Now I just needed content. I read through some of the wiki and settled on Mullvad+qbittorrent to find the content I wanted. With everything configured it still didn't really feel complete, so I set up profiles for my family members and gave them their own passwords to access the content. I quickly realized that 64 GB was not nearly enough (without a rolling library) and I was getting annoyed with having to constantly swith the flash drive I was using between the Le Potato and the laptop where I was downloading my content. So I went out and bought a 4TB USB SSD from Crucial and set up access as a NAS on Ubuntu with Samba.

It's just now finally set up. My family texts me to let me know what it is they're wanting to watch, I torrent it, upload it to my NAS, and Jellyfin streams that content to my family 100% free. I've turned my 6 family members into pirates and they barely even realize it.

So I use AD and RD. Sometimes shit it on one, or the other, or both. But this news sucks to hear.

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! Crewmates, please join me in a hearty welcome to all FMHY users recently joining our instance.

TLDR: due to a number of ongoing issues with their instance, FMHY has recently announced they are moving their lemmy community to dbzer0 - !freemediaheckyeah@lemmy.dbzer0.com

I already bought and listened to all 14 books on Audible in English, but my wife wants to listen to them in German. They are purchasable on Audible, but they have been split into three parts per book at 25€/part. I hate it. And I do not want support this practice. We would've bought them had they kept one part per book.

However, I'm not able to find those audiobooks in German on any public tracker. Can somebody perhaps point me into the right direction, please?

Thanks a bunch!

Edit: Usenet for the rescue. Didn't know it existed.

What's... The least crappiest TV os experience?

A smart TV with android/ android tv/ google TV/ those custom xiaomi/one plus/ moto/ Samsung or tizen or web os?

Or just a dumb TV + streaming stick?

The reason? I don't want to be encumbered by "you can't install this app" nonsense.

Something open or accessible at least

The Pirate Bay celebrates its 20th anniversary today. Founded in 2003 by a collective of hackers and activists, the small Swedish BitTorrent tracker grew to become a global icon for online piracy. The rebellious torrent site has a turbulent history and clashed with law enforcement authorities on multiple occasions. Despite these setbacks, it remains online today.

It looks like I have nothing more to add to the conversation than the fact that almost every vpn which has a free plan doesn't allow torrenting. That's it folks. Ignore the post. Gonna not delete it because, well for the archieve ig

Here’s what I learnt, almost every vpn which has a free version doesn’t allow torrenting. Not even protonvpn, however if apparently atlasvpn allows it, but atlasvpn didn’t work for me, so I am gonna go take a nap AND abandon this thread.

I was wondering how you torrent using qbittorrent and manage to stay anonymous. I realize I can use a VPN, but VPN networks can fail. Apparently, there is a kill switch which can be applied so that qbittorent would kill all processes when the VPN is disconnected, I was wondering how one could do this. I live in a country where torrenting might be cracked down, so I just want to be secure and not take any chances.

Also, I realize I should not torrent over the tor network but what about VPN are they built to handle such a load?

PS: I won't download more than 300mbs per day.

I see people complaining about it when someone shows their tracker in reddit, and it makes sense.

I know it is hard to get a new tracker popular (specially if its public) but it will just make people complain and not use it, why would you a normal person use a brand new tracker and not like torrentgalaxy which is very known, when both of them have the same exact torrent?

E: archive.org gave me some options which I need to test, but for now I'm calling it SOLVED, thanks!

I know I'm not meant to ask for a specific title, but it's the second in the series where you age up your empire wink wink..
Looking for the HD edition in English, so far I just keep getting Russian versions, if I risk downloading at all, since most the sites that are coming up in my search look dodgy af..

I am looking for for an app that registers as a YouTube endpoint, but has no ads and tracking (or backdoors). I had one (forgot the name) which stopped working. Please advice.

I'm considering using RD, but before sign-in up and paying for it, I would like to know if is there a way or a guide on how to get tools like radarr to automatically use RD for downloads instead of using VPNs and seedboxes/torrentboxes.

If you do have a similar setup, can you describe it? Thanks!

I use Hetzner as a seedbox and then have PLEX as my media server ran on the same hardware. It's worked perfectly fine for years. But recently PLEX says they will be blocking Hetzner hosting in the next few weeks. I've been considering moving to Jellyfin for a while, but I'm worried they will do the same thing in future.

Does anyone know if that's a real possibility?

Also, if I setup a VPN and just download stuff I torrent from my seedbox to a local PLEX server, would I be in any more risk of legal issues then I am now?

Am I looking at this completely wrong, and I should do something completely different?

To clarify what I am thinking of doing:

Keep my Hetzner as my seedbox and continue to download using my IPTorrents account. Setup a Local Plex or Jellyfin server and download from my seedbox to that local server that will be ran behind a VPN.

UPDATE: So this past weekend I did some testing and JellyFin is now my new Media Streaming software on my server. Going to take some time to learn how it works compared to PLEX, but so far things have been nearly 1 to 1. Thanks everyone for the help, I'm very grateful.

The aim is to have a qbittorrent setup combined with a service like plex (or jellyfin?) to easily stream music, movies and TV shows to my mobile devices.

Is there a comprehensive guide or list of good software and hardware one could use to accomplish such a thing?

What I know/have already:

  • Good, paid VPN: Mullvad
  • Mediaserver software: Jellyfin
  • Torrenting software: qbittorrent
  • ???
