The Saturday Tour includes the Nature Walk 'Diane Gabriel Trail" as well as the lab access. $10, the fossils in the lab are pretty cool, I wish you had more time with them. Tour is done by the seasonal intern, but worthwhile if you happen to be able to catch it. Trail no longer has the large Hadrosaur on site unfortunately, although its to preserve it.

No trip to Makoshika State Park would be complete without visiting the small free museum and visitor's center, which houses a variety of small fossils that can be touched as well as information on the surrounding badlands, the KT boundary, and the dinosaur fossils that have been found at the Park.

I believe this was also a replica, but possibly had some original fossil section, of a Triceratops fossil found at the park.

Ancient Bison skull found at the park. Shows the massive difference in sized between Bison then and now. They didn't list the date on this, but the 'Ancient Bison" species was 10k-70k years ago.

Replica of dig site of a Thescelosaurus found at the park.

The following are all from the lab section and only seen on the tour. Also had some turtle shell fossils and other coll oddities.

Part of a fossilized brow horn from a triceratops, along with a rib head.

'Hand' bone fossils of a Champosaurus.

A fossilized Ceratopsian rib bone. Almost the size of my wrist.

Fossilized redwood tree pine cones.

c/wildlifephoto post of a Mountain Bluebird seen on the trail from above.

One of the longer trails in this small state park in eastern Montana, it is mostly easy with a couple large hill climbs. After is along a ridgeline looking down into badlands valleys dotted with hoodoos. Park is known for its dinosaur fossils and the KT boundary, also has a disc golf course.

The trail leads on to some weathering sections of badlands in this area. Good footing, but watch for sinkholes.

A collection of hoodoos from the small garden area.

A small boulder field from where the columns collapsed under their capstones.

Moderate to hard, 13.4 mi Out and Back

2,411 ft elevation gain

Hiked 7/9/25

I saw a Grizzly Bear while hiking along this trail, photos on c/wildlifephotography.

Oldman Lake hosts the first campsite for a couple of hikes continuing from there and not usually out and back. Its a section of my all time favorite hike, the Dawson-Pitamakan loop trail, which I ended up only doing this section of as an out and back due to bee sting and a tired thigh from closing out CA.

Flinsch Peak and an unnamed lower peak in front of it.

What I believe to be a Canada Jay staring down at me. Was constantly on the move so only had a acouple decent photos before it left the area with its pals.

Small double waterfall seen along the trail. 1/8s exposure.

Hard, 13.76 mi out and back trail

Likely the most known hike in Waterton Lakes, this has it all. A boat ride, two massive waterfalls, a tunnel, chains section along the cliff wall, Cutthroat Trout, Bald Eagles, and a small brush with the US border. Epic throughout, add Hells roaring canyon on the way back for geological features.

One of the many good views along the shoreline of Crypt Lake, Sarcee Mountain rises above it all from the US side of the border just off of the trail.

The viewpoint from maybe 15 ft beside the main waterfall, which you can also get on top of. Unnamed lake below and I am not sure if that peak would be considered base of Sarcee Mountain or something else.

Trail shot from when you are near level with Crypt Lake but still maybe half a mile away. Sarcee mountain forms the bowl around the lake.

This was the final hike I did while in Canada, absolutely wonderful country that I would highly recommend visiting if you have not. I'll have a short hike coming up from when I just drove over the Great Lakes at the start of last week but this hike was the final of the 3 months around the Rockies.

Hey everyone! I am new here. I don’t have a camera now, but I borrowed my dad’s Nikon. I felt inspired to record the textures and colours of the materials I found around my town during my walks

2.0 mi Combined Nature Walks

384 ft elevation gain

Hiked 7/4/25

Two nature walks that go in opposite directions from the Red Canyon parking area. One takes you to two small waterfalls while the other climbs a short bit along a small canyon carved by Red Rock Creek. Area is heavily used for its ample sunning opportunities and is a great area for the whole family.

The view down into the canyon from the bridge that spans the furthest point on the trail. This was around noon, and the light was getting close to dropping into the canyon.

Blakiston Fall, with about 20 ft of freefall and another 15 ft or so leading into it. A couple of viewing platforms are built near the falls, including where this photo is taken from.

A second, smaller falls above Blakiston falls. There are a few good views that are worth going just past the falls for. Mt Blaksiton left of center.

Tried my hand on a fair bit of editing, which I usually don't do that much. Hopefully it isn't too over the top :3

Hard, 11.5 mi loop trail

3,832 ft elevation gain including vertical chimney section

Hiked 7/2/25

Full Photoset

Another of my top hikes in Canada, it involves a vertical chimney section climbing up ledges. This gets you to the ridge, where you will still gain another 1k ft of elevation using just your legs again. Unreal views, including of the US. The valley for Wall lake could be a less adventurous version.

The trail follows along the left up Akamina ridge. You'll be hiking everything you seen and then returning down the valley on the right.

Looking south from the ridgeline is the United States, with Kinnerly Peak in the center. A thin strip signifying the border may be seen running left to right along the middle ridge.

Akamina ridge as seen before you descend down the other side towards Wall lake (pictured). On the far left where that little notch is is the other side of the vertical section.

A Marmot was stopped to smell the flowers while I climbed the chimney. One look at the shape I was in and it knew I wasn't a threat at that point. Probably the most relaxed Marmot I've ever encountered.

Moderate 7.3 mi out and back

1,703 ft elevation gain

Hiked 7/1/25

A relatively easy hike that accumulates 1700 ft of elevation to make it moderate, this trail takes you to the back end of the valley between Mt Lineham and Hawkins where a bridal veil type waterfall rushes down. With the burnt forest, glimpses may be seen from miles away. Optional scramble at falls gets you to a great large flat ledge area.

Looking towards the Falls through the burn section early on the trail.

Head on view of Lineham falls and the ridgeline of Mount Hawkins.

Picture of Lineham falls from roughly where the scramble area begins. Still a great view while still being relatively easy to get to if you want to skip the scramble.

Just got a Canon R50 mirrorless and took it out tonight, right before sunset.

I would appreciate any tips on how to improve a picture like this in my editor.

I'm hoping to contribute some neat pics coming soon!

Hard, 18mi loop trail

4,715 ft elevation gain

Hiked 6/29/25

Full photoset

One of the top Canadian hikes I did, this hike is a monster that gets views of all of the surrounding park at some point. Trail is in great shape but has several physically demanding uphills. Two campsites allow it to be backpacked as well, final several miles (counterclockwise) are a slog to finish after such epic views and long miles.

The long walk along the backside of Avion ridge before you'll do a steep climb again. No photos, but after I did this part I saw a mountain goat absolutely haul full speed down this slope. Had heard him kicking rocks from above as I passed.

This section of the Hike to the top of Avion ridge was very steep, but had pretty wide solid rock trail to ascend. Goes from about 7400' to 7800'.

Close to the highest point you'll get on Avion ridge (although Newman Peak would have taken you higher). Wildflowers dot the ridgeline as you go. After hiking the backside, you’ll follow beside that snowline before descending into the unseen canyon.

Hard, 12.3 mi out and back

3,845 ft elevation gain

Hiked 6/29/25

Adding roughly 1600 ft in elevation to the Goat Lake trail as well as crossing a very steep sided scree field with surprisingly good traction, with an epic view from the top. Once on the ridges its wide open, but you'll work to get there. Return the same route or a very long loop using Avion ridge.

Looking towards Newman Peak from the ridge line between it and Avion Ridge. A trail may be seen cutting along the scree to the right to get to the next ridge. It then ascends to the peak and can either loop or return the way you came. I was unaware of the loop and just came back across the scree field.

Looking Northeast from the pass below Newman Peak. Spread Eagle mountain in the distance and Yarrow creek flowing from the lake in the valley.

Photo of me on the pass below Newman Peak. The flat area was incredibly wide along this pass.
