Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

An employee at the hospital, who the Herald has agreed not to name, said a man entered the ED about 11pm on Saturday.

He allegedly approached the receptionist and asked where his "wife" was being treated. When told, the man entered a cubicle, pulled a machete out from his hoodie and struck another man who was accompanying the female patient in the head.

"There was a lot of blood - as with all head wounds - [on the] walls, floor [and] hallway," the employee said.

The female patient and a junior doctor allegedly disarmed the man after the attack. The assailant then stood with his hands behind his back and surrendered to police when they arrived.

I'm not saying anyone should, just that they would have ample legal funding if they did...

Still haven't seen any prosecution for when they blocked the motorway either.

For a dollar and some change, Patchy makes paper cup orders out of a supermarket trolley using instant coffee, boiled water stored in a Thermos, white sugar, and blue cap milk.

Pay $2, and Patchy will throw in two biscuits for your troubles - a stark difference in price compared to the cafés sitting above him in Commercial Bay, where you're more likely to purchase a coffee and cookie for $10 and above.

Patchy was told on Thursday morning by Auckland Council he will need a permit to continue operating his wallet-friendly business.

Luckily, sudden TikTok fame and his can-do attitude has won him over a group of supportive fans - some of whom have even set up a Givealittle page to help him pay for the permit and the tools needed to make his business official.

TL;DR

An Australian pharmacy will continue to send lower-cost diabetes equipment across the Tasman, despite a cease and desist from a medical manufacturer.

...

“This is $130 that my whānau, and many other whānau, could have in their pocket each month,” she told them.

...

manufacturer Medtronic had sent David Jones Pharmacy a letter threatening legal action if the company continued to supply Kiwi customers with the sensors.

...

The pharmacy was “not a legally authorised distributor of Medtronic diabetes products in New Zealand”

...

“We have chosen to ignore [the letter] as it was built upon unsubstantiated accusations,” Le said.

...

“It creates a massive inequity for families who don’t have the financial means to pay a weekly amount, and it’s also a contributing risk to longer term health outcomes.

“It's really expensive to keep them alive. By not funding [sensors] you are risking the lives of kids who don't have that layer of privilege.”

I fucking hate this bullshit. Hong Le is a hero.

See the previous post for the list of songs: https://lemmy.nz/post/8465782

If you haven't already, vote here: https://survey.lemmy.nz/index.php/152314

It's tight so I need a few more voters to get us a clear winner!

Voting ends at 12 noon-ish on 30/3/2024 or whenever we have a leading song if it's still a tie at 12.

And if you don't recognise any of the songs, that's because it has to be a 2023 song and you're old 🙂

A late afternoon display over the lake today - just spectacular. Looking forward to the main event tomorrow!

It sounds like we have a lot to learn from this, to be honest.

We flew to the southern-most glaciers, ones that we've not seen since 2018," said Lorrey on the back of this year's trip.

"One is now two thirds of the size it was on our last visit," he added.

The institute said that New Zealand had experienced seven of its hottest years on record over the past decade.

Even if this trend was to be reversed, Lorrey said that many glaciers were too far gone to be saved.

"Even if we got a few cooler seasons, they wouldn't be enough to undo the damage that's already been done," he said.

"That's how stark it is, and it's not just happening in New Zealand but all over the world."

It always makes me happy when a delivery or courier company provides 'realtime' tracking.

Hi all!

We had suggestions for Lemmyvision in this post, and then I forgot about it for a while. Or maybe I was just waiting for all submissions to be in.

Anyway, we've got to get onto this soon, so here's a poll of all the songs in the previous post that were from 2023:

The poll is multichoice (select as many as you like), the song with the most votes wins and we submit that to the competition.

Sorry, I know everyone loves STV but I don't thing the survey software supports it so we will just tally up the song with the most votes.

If you don't know the songs, give them a listen here:

Yahyah feat. Mohi - I Like You (english/te reo)

The Black Seeds - So True/Koia ko kohi (te teo version from 2023)

Stan Walker - I Am

L.A.B - Cassanova

Tiki Taane, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra - Tangaroa spotify - youtube

The first day of the SailGP racing event in Lyttelton has been abandoned after dolphins were sighted on the course.

The race was due to get under way about 3pm, but was delayed after the dolphins were spotted.

After they had not moved on about two hours later, the race was called off entirely.

Concerns about Hector's dolphins had been raised prior to the event.

Two dolphins had been spotted in the area, within 300 metres of the boats, during the final race in 2023.

But despite being told to stop racing, the event director allowed it to go ahead.

That led to an independent decision-maker being appointed for this year's event. They sit in the control room and are tasked with halting racing if any dolphins are seen.

Organisers have acknowledged that boat strikes are likely to be fatal to dolphins.

While chocolate-studded or fruit-free sourdough or brioche hot cross buns are becoming common, a Taranaki bakery has found a way to push the boundaries even further by producing a cheese and onion version containing onion powder, onion flakes and "a very nice Dutch cheese".

Trade Aid will shut its 24 shops, known for selling rugs, baskets, arts and crafts goods from developing countries.

The not-for-profit group was a leader in importing fair-trade products such as coffee and ethically based food items, but said it needed to change to survive.

The shops would be progressively closed and the organisation shifted to online sales, wholesaling and importing from producers and farmers.

I didn't actually know they were building a new wharf on Somes, it's great that the island is getting more infrastructure. And great they caught the ants, obviously.
