Note: This was originally written and published 24 years ago at the New Wave Games website, a back then large MtG retailer, which was owned by Alex Shvartsman if I remember this correctly, website. Keep in mind, that the author (me!) was 17 years old then. I did not change much at how the report was written, just a couple of minor things to clarify and make it an easier read.

I got that album thingy with inserts, but whats bugging me is - if im not aiming to collect a whole edition, how do i organise my cards? by color? by some other order? I have mixed WoE and Commander Masters cards, but would like to have them somewhere nice when they are not in decks.

If i like an ed and want to have it complete then its going into its own album / fold and sorted by numbers.

I kinda hoped ixalan would be it, but that mixed universe thing is so not my cup of tea...

Aside from local play, which i have not found yet. Last time i played was just after the Masques block, cannot remember the name of edition, had an curved axe for a symbol.

Ordered two standard decks as a nostalgia, kid absolutely loves it, im waiting for a box of eldraine and ixalan (those smaller boxes with 8 boosters or so and one foil card) because i do not plan to hoard the cards.

Ill have to look into commander, seems interesting for super comfy play.

Bonus question, does black white deck where you clean the board with wrath of god then return zombies from the graveyard work?

How do you play with two sided cards? Are they just for sleeves?

Where to get informed? What works now? I see more people are playing chilled, for a difference back then you would get obliterated.

MaRo goes over all of the decision making processes for UB sets, particularly how they choose which other IPs to go with:

  • Overlap with Magic players or potential Magic players
  • Elements that translate well to Magic cards
  • A partner that wants to work with us

He also spends a good bit time discussing how they "[make] sure you capture what people love about the property." For WHO this became a variation of Partner for commanders partnering with a "companion." Kind of annoying they went with that term given companions are already a thing from Ikoria!

Sorry but I don't have anyone IRL to share how happy I am about this. All my real-life drafts have been really disappointing and I was feeling down on myself.

Deck was Red-White with a focus on roles and enchantments. I got [[Archon of the Wild Rose]] and [[A Tale for the Ages]] Pack 2 Pick 1 and Pack 2 Pick 2 respectively. [[Savior of the Sleeping]] is a card I have played with a bunch but have never utilised properly before now. My two Saviors were probably the MVPs, I managed to frequently get them quite buffed-up.

Looking back over my draft and I realize now that I didn't wind-up using my first three picks! I realized late into the first pack that White seemed really open, so when Pack 2 came around, and I got those two really helpful rares, I got the sense I was onto a good thing.

Thought it was funny how it felt like such a relief getting 3-3 with a failed U/G draft deck, and such a disappointment going 4-3 with the streamlined R/W aggro deck I got right after.

Wizards announced new efforts to promote Standard play that start next year. Some highlights:

  • Special promos for new weekly Standard events at LGSs
  • $75k Standard Open at MagicCon Chicago, which is "the first large, open field Standard tournament in quite some time"
  • Pro Tour Outlaws of Thunder Junction (second PT in 2024) will be Standard

From the official Twitter. This may be the coolest trophy they've ever made.

Maybe I'm late to the party, but it's cool to see Quintorious here! I assume this confirms the Planeswalker speculation, but who knows. Can't wait for more info!

*Also - Dinobots! Really hoping we get them as cards, or at the very least tokens.

I've been using Archidekt. I really like the built-in playtester, but the interface can be kind of sluggish, and some of the design decisions, especially around categorizing and sorting, are quite clunky.

I know there are a lot of options but I haven't tried any of them. Are there any that you'd recommend?

Still down for me but just curious what anyone else's client is showing.

Hopefully the drafts that were still open are able to still be resumed! I liked the deck I was playing for once!

Edit, saw this comment on Reddit from an employee:

Drafting is being unstable right now, so we've temporarily disabled it while we sort things out. If you've completed the drafting portion, you'll be able to resume your event once we're able to turn drafts back on. Sorry for the delay, but you won't lose your progress.

Personally I'm enjoying it! I generally tend to prefer pretty formats with a decent amount of complexity, which WOE doesn't have a ton of, but certainly it has enough to keep things interesting and plays quite smoothly once the patterns are picked up. It's a format where the archetypes flow into each other nicely, which is particularly appreciated, imo.

I know it's only been out a week so far, but what are all y'all's feelings on it? Yay? Nay?

Hi all!

I pretty much only play constructed formats, mostly Explorer. I never create my own deck because I suck at it. I play lists made by other people that look fun and engaging. For context, I rank at least Diamond every season.

I tend to play a couple of drafts per set, mostly to get gems for the mastery pass. I also play all free phantom drafts. I find the drafts fun but I'm atrocious at it. I usually go 2-3 and perform pretty terribly. I don't think I've ever gone above the silver rank, but I guess I don't play that much either.

I'd like to educate myself on how to become a better drafter. I like drafting but as a F2P player, my win-rate is unsustainable. I tend to prioritize removal and "bombs" but my decks always feels like a pile of stuff that don't interact very well with eachover. I use the free Untapped extension that ranks the cards but I think it just aggravates my problem of getting a pile of nice cards that don't mesh together that well.

Any resource for a total newbie would be very appreciated. Cheers!

I just want to recognize the fact that Wizards of the Coast made a new card type and it didn't break anything. No battles have been banned and nobody's talking about banning any battles. Some decks play battles, but you don't have to play battles to compete. Battles function on MTGO and Arena. They're fun and flavorful and they add strategic depth.

Probably the lesson Wizards learned from this is "we need to push battles harder" and they'll come back in a year or two with some broken ones. But for now, I'm appreciating that they tried something new and it went okay.

The latest Magic set Wilds of Eldraine has ten two-color draft archetypes centered around classic fairy tales, enchantments, and epic adventures.

Magic: The Gathering's newest expansion set, Wilds of Eldraine, will unleash the power of fairy tales and eternal slumber when it releases on September 8th. Wilds of Eldraine takes place on the post-Phyrexian invasion plane of Eldraine, a world besieged by wicked witches and the nightmarish horrors of Ashiok the planeswalker. All the fairy tale action will unfold not just in Standard when this set releases, but also in Limited formats like draft and sealed.

Wilds of Eldraine is a large, complicated expansion set that brings back the best elements of Throne of Eldraine, like Adventures, Food tokens, and "enchantments matter" themes, while also adding exciting new effects like Bargain, Celebration, and even token enchantments called Roles. There's a lot to unpack in Wilds of Eldraine for Limited, including the inner workings of its 10 two-color draft archetypes and the fairy tales that they represent. Knowing all this can give any draft player a serious edge at their local game store's Limited events.

According to comprehensive rule 300.1 (page 56 of the linked pdf), the card types are: "artifact, conspiracy, creature, dungeon, enchantment, instant, land, phenomenon, plane, planeswalker, scheme, sorcery, tribal, and vanguard."

Notably, battle is missing from that list. Probably just an error, but does this have implications for tournament play?

Can we think of any funny interactions because of this?

EDIT: Now claimed.

Hi,

I attended two pre-releases this weekend and got two codes for WOE MTGA packs. I believe you can't redeem multiple codes. I've tried and the website says I can't.

In case anyone else can use it, it's:

Please be sure to comment when you've claimed it, so I can update the post.
