Jerboa is a native-android client for Lemmy, built using the native android framework, Jetpack Compose.

Warning: You can submit issues, but between Lemmy and lemmy-ui, I probably won't have too much time to work on them. Learn jetpack compose like I did if you want to help make this app better.

In my image is the app settings for Jerboa, and I can see that it will open links from those instances automatically (and it seems to work fine) - however, I'm on Lemmy.world, and it's not one of them, so links there (or to other instances) open in a browser.

The "Add link" option is greyed out there. Is there anything I can do within Jerboa to enable more instances to play nice? Or is it something that the instances themselves would need to implement in some way?

Thanks!

I want to start a Spanish language server + communities. Is the multi-language support in the Jerboa roadmap? I could help with the translation.

Or maybe it is only me?

When I'm clicking a link to a community on the instance I'm logged into (Lemmy.world), the community opens in my web browser rather than in jerboa. Given, this is annoying especially when I want to subscribe to that community.

I should note that I'm using a url checker app so this might be the reason for such behavior.

Right now, the read threads are not removed from the list of threads. After reading a few, it becomes very cumbersome to scroll to find next unread thread.

While on the same note, if I open any thread and go back to the list, it still shows as unread till I refresh the app. Ideally it should turn to read once it's clicked.

I tried changing the default listing type to subscribed, but it didn't work.

How do I change it to Subscribed as the default?

831

Right now, under the "Subscriptions" section in the sidebar, communities with no icon are moved a bit to the left relative of communities with icons. This makes it seem like the other communities are a category of the one with no icon. Eg. In image below, Music Gear seems like it's part of a category "Arduino".

I suggest a placeholder image for the communities with no icons. Either that, or move them in line with the communities with icons while leaving the icon blank.

Edit: love the new update btw

Prior to 0.0.33 there were all the buttons below messages, vote arrows, show context, mark read and reply. Have they been hidden and I just don't know how to show them? Is this a bug? Am I dumb?

EDIT: Added my bug report as embedded post link.

EDIT²: Closing my bug report, solution is to long press on the username area of the message.

0.0.33 update log should mention this. It's a good feature, but frustrating if it's not mentioned in the documentation.

Edit³: I believe that the line in the changelog:

"Comment action bar improvements by @twizmwazin in #453"
Refers to what is happening, I'm not entirely sure.

As a longtime redditor but newcomer to Lemmy, it strikes me as odd that Jerboa shows only posts from the local instance in the home feed by default.

If we are to promote the use of less-burdened instances, and stress the connectedness of this federated platform, we should be displaying the collective content right from the start. Content scarcity is already a stumbling block for many converts, and purposely limiting the view even further doesn't make much sense to me.

If there is a more technical reason for this default view, then I can understand the rationale, but if not I'm curious to know why this is the case. What are your thoughts?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I can't figure out how to search a particularly community! On Jerboa, the two posts in this community are showing no comments or upvotes, but if you visit it on a browser you can see comments and upvotes https://lemmy.ml/c/csgo

Title says it all, would be great addition or atleast have an internal browser.

So I'm a reddit refugee and downloaded Jerboa on Android. It took me forever to figure out how to login. I'm posting this in the hopes that it helps others.

On the Home screen I had to click on the top left hamburger menu. Them there was a down arrow in the upper right that I had to press before it said Add Login.

I hope this helps anyone with a similar issue.

I wanted to change the default list type from Local to Subscribed, but when I tap the settings, it doesn't do anything.

Anyone else able to or is something not working on my end?

Sorry if this has already been requested or in the works. Is there a roadmap anywhere?

Jerboa Error (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I joined Lemmy recently because of the whole Reddit situation and I’m a little bit disappointed with the mobile app situation - don’t get me wrong, I’m really appreciative with what the community achieve so far and I know it’s all on people’s free time it gets developed.

But Jerboa looks pretty good (really reminds me of simplified Infinity for Reddit) but there is some serious features missing. My main point is, on my phone at least, it’s unusable. Whenever I’m trying to load some posts it keeps showing

Value of type java.lang.String cannot be converted to JSONObject

I’m using the web app because it’s the only way I can view posts, but it’s missing some features.

Keep up the good work!

P.S. Can I change something in the settings to make my posts to be tagged as written in English by default?

Hope this an appropriate post - I just want to understand subscribing through the app. I tried !(community here) in the search bar but nothing happened?

846

This is probably a very stupid question

Essentially it took me around 1.5 minutes to figure out how to login on the app. You tap buttons and it says login required. Why not just open up the login interface? Or provide an easy link or ask immediately after first run.

Or on the sidebar, have an obvious banner that says "Login".

Just too many taps to get logged in to add your first account, and too difficult to figure out where to do so. And no help when the app prompts you to login. Make it super easy to do that!

Edit: I have developed modern UX/UI, so if even I found it confusing, I know non-expert or unfamiliar users are going to fail to ever use this app, which would be a shame. It's really great!

Hey! I hope this kind of post is allowed. If not, I'll remove it, obviously.

I've seen many complaints/suggestions that jerboa opens all links to Lemmy-instances in the standard browser. Which, granted, I don't know how long it would take to fix it/implement it as a feature.

So, as I've stated in the title, I discovered some kind of work around! If you see someone dropping a link for an instance, try opening their profile and look into their comments and posted, whether they posted in said channel. Chances are high (at least for the ones I tried) that they posted there already. So you could open the instance directly in the app by tapping on its name above the post/comment.

I realize that this will not work on every occasion, but at least right now most people who plug a channel seem to be a moderator or at least somewhat active in it.

So, until we get an easier way, try looking through the posters profile! :)

Also, if you also know of different work-arounds feel free to share! :D

It would be great if a small translation icon is placed next to the posts and comments on the home page and a feature that translates it to the device language or the preferred language for translation from the settings is added when clicked.

The perfect social media android experience, using Jerboa for ad free, federated, social media and Newpipe for ad free YouTube with a beautiful userface.

Install newpipe with f-droid.

Remember to go into Apps and click on Newpipe and change default urls so Android opens all the YouTube urls with Newpipe.

After that, it's heaven on mobile.
