Jerboa is a native-android client for Lemmy, built using the native android framework, Jetpack Compose.

Warning: You can submit issues, but between Lemmy and lemmy-ui, I probably won't have too much time to work on them. Learn jetpack compose like I did if you want to help make this app better.

Hey y'all. Since Lemmy 0.18 has been out and sort of breaks Jerboa a bit, I will show off the versions I've cobbled together to patch it.

I started this repo to allow older versions of Android to run it (5.0 and up). There's two release version that may be of interest.

  • v35 takes the latest release from dessalines and made it compatible for older devices. Can only login to Lemmy 0.18 servers.
  • v34-plus hotfix1 where I patched the crash on startup issue and allow anonymous logins on other servers by leaving the username empty. Can only login to Lemmy 0.17.x servers and below.

I'm hoping these will be helpful for anyone facing issues.

Hi! Loving Jerboa and Lemmy in general, and the latest updates have really improved the experience for me. I had two thoughts for potential improvements that I figured I'd float, and could make a GitHub ticket if they seemed like good things to implement:

  • I love the list view, but I find very often that if the post title is only one line tall it is very easy to accidentally click whatever is directly below it. If it's possible, a little extra padding to the selectable area for the post title would be great (even if it's not visible padding and just some coding trickery)
  • I wouldn't mind an option to hide community and user icons on a post within my feed (for a cleaner/more compact look), while still showing user icons once I'm in comment view (maybe I missed this option?)
  • One of my most used features coming from Boost for Reddit was the ability to long-press the community for a given post and get a popup menu, from which I could block/mute said community from my feeds without having to actually click through. If this is possible to implement that would be AMAZING. Screenshot attached:

If it's better to file these in GitHub I can do that :) thanks again for a great app!

The Brazilian community of reddit opened lemmy.eco.br to host a lemmy server, but every link of it opens the explorer and can't add it as a default url to open with jerboa.

Im on Android 13, with f-droid's 0.0.34 jerboa.

Thanks.

Is there a reason that I can't go back past 3 hours when scrolling new?

I just updated to 0.35 and got a translation forced on me with no option to go back to English. The translations are a bit of a mess in many ways. Literal translations that take no consideration of context, broken layout elements due to longer strings of text...

Don't get me wrong, is great that they are thinking of making it easy for everyone to use the app, I'm just asking to make it optional if possible.

BTW, I don't know if Jerboa devs monitor this community, but I don't use Matrix, so I'm not sure where else to request this.

Hello,

I changed my password, now I can't log into the account anymore. Works on desktop, but Jerboa now won't let me in. Can I delete the account and add it anew?

Not comments are fine, but I don't want to see posts without real users behind them.

Hello It should be nice if jerboa could remember last sorting order or at least respect account setting on that regard

Since the latest update, the app sometimes crashes when I'm upvoting, opening a post, etc.

I don't know if there are crash logs, but I'm willing to look

I tried to login with jerboa after enabling two factor authentication (2FA) and I can't seem to find a way to enter the code. Is it supported in the current version?

As in the image, there's a header that mentions the email auth being enabled and to check spam. Jerboa renders it quite oddly. Is this expected behaviour (as in instance admins shouldn't add text like this) or is this worthy of a github issue?

This image depicts the actual site, the following text: NEW USERS: We have temporarily enabled email verification until Captchas have been re-released. If you do not get an email please check your spam/junk folder. is the problem.

Edit: According to our instance admin this is a jerboa issue. "Its not rendering an element thats available within the lemmy features. Not doing anything custom that lemmy doesnt do"

I shall file a bug report later tonight unless someone beats me to it!

Update: An issue was already filed, you may follow it here

Update 2: This issue was fixed with this merge

I updated to the latest jerboa version and can't login to aussie.zone. Maybe its because I enabled 2fa on the account?

When you press the image it collapses the comment, I would like that it would open the image and allow zoom in instead.

Cross-post using Jerboa (discuss.tchncs.de)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by ottk3@discuss.tchncs.de to c/jerboa@lemmy.ml

Is it possible to cross-post using ~~Jebora~~ Jerboa?

Since this helps greatly spreading posts in the Fediverse especially if they are initially posted in smaller instances or to find communities on similar topics.

Is there already an option and I have just missed it?

Edit: It's Jerboa, Jerboa dammit!

469

Is there a way to search for posts with certain keywords in them? If so, can this only be done locally, or can it also be done across instances?

This was a feature that I fell in love with on Boost. I like to sort by top day and do short quick bursts of scrolling through the feed, so it helped a lot.

I'm not even sure if it's possible on lemmy, or if anyone else feels they'd get use from it as well.

Search communities (lemmy.world)

Hi, I love the app but was just wondering if it is possible to have a search communities button in the sidebar as I don't like having the navigation bar at the bottom of my screen turned on because it takes up so much room and on my last phone the reddit navigation bar got screen burned onto it.

Edit: My app just updated to version 0.0.35 and there's now a communities button in the sidebar :)

472

When sorting by all instances > all communities > hot, I get as the top post a 20 votes, 1 comment post. Just 5 or so posts below, a 5 votes and 0 comments post.

If I sort by active instead, I see two day old posts.

Should I be sorting differently?

EDIT: Nevermind, I wasn't using my brain. All good on any instance using lemmy 0.18. Just need to wait for Jerboa to update. I was about to delete the post, but maybe other people were thinking the same, so I'll keep it so they can read this. Just wait for Jerboa to update, next version should be much better in this regard.

I've had this happen a few times now when looking at images, I tap an image to open it, turn my devise to landscape mode, but instead of seeing the image my feed refreshes. Known bug, or has anyone else found this too?

474

Got logged out multiple times, not wanting to let me log in, suddenly decides I'm logged in. And actually right now, it says I'm not logged in, but acts like I am. Anytime experience this weirdness?

I've been seeing a lot of posts about people being stuck between server (lemmy 0.18) and client (Jerboa 0.0.33—35) versions (not installed from IzzyOnDroid and logged in) with Jerboa crashing. Here's a way to avoid that issue while still being able to log in and browse both Lemmy 0.18 or older instances.

  • Add IzzyOnDroid repo to F-Droid
  • Delete app data from Android app info (edit)
  • Uninstall current version of Jerboa
  • Install 0.0.33 IzzyOnDroid version of Jerboa
  • Set phone to Airplane mode
  • Open Jerboa and use the hamburger menu to add your account
  • Fill in server, username, and password
  • Turn off Airplane mode
  • Login

You'll get a old server version notification of your server hasn't updated but you'll be able to use Jerboa regardless of server version.

Hope this helps!
