The company shipped its first disc ('Beetlejuice') way back in 1998.

In the Q&A afterwards, Cameron didn’t announce any disc or streaming release dates but did say he has completed all his work on the 4K UHD Blu-ray, which is indeed real and should be out relatively soon:

“I’ve completed the transfer, all the mastering is done, I think it drops pretty soon like… in a couple of months or something like that. So it’s out of my hands at this point. There’s a lot of added material that they’re sticking in there, and will be available on streaming simultaneously. But I didn’t just want to look at the old HD transfer. I wanted to do it right.”

That's the news. 😁

Yesterday's mammoth leak of Microsoft documentation was eye-opening for all sorts of reasons, not least because it laid bare the company's tentative hardware plans for the back half of this console generation. But the scale of the leak was only part of the surprise. Equally stunning was Microsoft's plan - circa April 2022, at least - to ditch physical media altogether in new Xbox consoles from next year, for what it privately described as an "adorably all digital" future.

Of course, Microsoft has now responded - via a short social media post from Xbox boss Phil Spencer that quickly sought to reframe the leak as outdated without getting into the details of exactly what would now be different. But in just three sentences, the emphasis was clear: Spencer tripled down on what the internet had seen as being "old", adding that "so much had changed" and that Xbox would "share the real plans" when ready.

And thank goodness, right? Because anything else would have been outright confirmation that Xbox was killing discs for good in the next 12 months. And if you're someone who still buys physical copies of games, or uses your console to play older games from past generations, or simply someone who cares about game preservation, Microsoft's outdated plans were a disaster. Such a move would have marked a monumental shift by Microsoft away from disc-based media, to a future where playing games relies solely on unsharable digital licences or ongoing subscription memberships.

It would also be bad for the 4k Blu-ray market as you'd be removing the ability to play them from one of the most ubiquitous UHD disc players in people's homes. And here I was wondering if the last machines in this phase might push the players to include all the fancy HDR and audio formats, when Microsoft were planning on doing the opposite. Now we just don't know what those plans are, it could still be on the cards.

I’m really rather cross that Panasonic has killed off the recordable Blu-ray disc, at least as far as its own production is concerned. They stopped making them in February, citing falling demand for the discs, which they’d started producing back in 2006.

You might be surprised that I'm feeling angry about the demise of what might seem old, clunky and increasingly irrelevant technology. Optical discs have never been particularly convenient. Steve Jobs famously described Blu-ray, the third generation of the technology after CD and DVD, as “a bag of hurt”, mainly thanks to the complex licensing involved. Today we have the cloud and streaming media available anytime, anywhere in the very highest definition. Surely the technology’s ripe for retirement anyway.

The problem is that, despite their drawbacks, Blu-ray discs are still very good at a number of tasks for which there’s no real replacement, and if one of the long term champions of the technology is starting to give up on it, things aren’t looking bright for its future.

...

Other digital purchases may cease to exist when servers are taken offline or licensing agreements lapse. Sony for example announced in 2022 that hundreds of movie titles people purchased through the PlayStation store would no longer be accessible for licensing reasons.

You’ll have no such worries with a Blu-ray, making it practically the only way for movie enthusiasts to collect films in HD that won’t go missing or become incomplete overnight. Blu-ray could stay as a valuable and vibrant niche, like vinyl.

Several, “fourth generation” higher definition, higher capacity optical disc replacements have been announced but none has reached production (except for Sony’s archival cartridge system – see below) and none seem likely to. The Holographic Versatile Disc, for example, was touted to offer 6TB of capacity per disc but development fizzled out in the early 2010s.

...

My feeling of loss at the demise of BD-R doesn’t start and end with video. Perhaps even more importantly, it’s also a very useful backup medium for the home. BD-R discs can have an estimated 50 year life and they’re a great way of safely keeping reasonably large amounts of data that would be too expensive to store in the cloud or for which you’d like an additional non-cloud backup – priceless family photo collections or home videos for example.

Capacities range from 25GB to 100GB per disc. Compared to alternatives like regular hard drives, which are almost guaranteed to fail, SSDs that may lose their charge, and RAID drives which, while better, are also prone to catastrophic failure, Blu-rays can be very reassuring.

...

Meanwhile I think we should look to laser-etched silica glass as a Blu-ray replacement. 5D Optical discs developed by researchers at the University of Southampton offer fast and efficient optical storage that’s 10,000 times denser than Blu-ray and with the prospect of millions of years of life, all on attractive glass discs that hold up to 500TB of data. And discs could potentially be very small. We could send off our archives to be copied onto tiny jewels, or buy films we wanted to keep on them too. How useful, and delightful!

Lionsgate has announced a new Clerks Complete Movie Collection, that includes Kevin Smith’s Clerks, Clerks II, and Clerks III on Blu-ray, in a special premium package that is “a 3D miniature of the iconic Quick Stop and RST Video storefronts.” It includes a working VHS return slot to hold your discs, and a “wall that you can vandalize” with cling stickers featuring “featuring in-world business logos and IYKYK jokes from the franchise.” Street date is 11/7 (SRP $129.99). It comes with a booklet and numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

If these are the existing discs, then I'll pass. You're paying for the packaging. If I had the money though, I haven't bought Clerks III yet.

We all have our favourite films but which one have you owned the most over the years?

I'm not such a big fan now but growing up it was the original Star Wars trilogy.

I had (deep breath):

The first wide-screen VHS release.

The Imperial Star Destroyer Executor VHS metal box set. (The trilogy in wide-screen with lots of extras on more tapes).

The official Maylaisan VideoCD trilogy set.

The UK laserdisc of the special edition trilogy.

The first release on DVD and the Blu-ray Saga set.

I also used to have various bootleg sets of the original trilogy sourced from LaserDiscs and a German copy of the special editions in HD before Blu-rays were released.

Phew!

That's the most varied. All my other films have followed the standard route of VHS, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K.

Anyone else?

EDIT: Forgot about my Laserdisc set!
