I've been listening to this stream on my transit into and out of work for a while now. Some of the music quality varies, but it's a real, sincere effort to promote musicians on the network and it feels in line with Pirate Radio. Lots of great songs, along with some very quirky interludes.

I know I've made the jump to Mastodon, and now lemmy. But what are the other sites that I'm missing out on?

I never got into mastodon because I couldn't connect multiple instances. I like this a lot about Lemmy so far (just here for a few minutes though).

Reading about the fediverse got me thinking. What other use cases could you think of? Maybe outside social media?

Would a fediverse password manager be more or less secure than some company owned pm?

How about "clones" of other social media like FB and Insta, TikTok?

What about a blogging community like Medium?

Other ideas?

@fediverse why are you reblogging all these brand new accounts with generic avatars and no followers?

At the moment the internet is flawed, do you think the fediverse is the solution?

Lemmy growth is crazy!

Blahaj zone (the Calckey instance) has been running for around 6 months now. We've had a slow but constant growth of new members, with a big spike when Calckey drew a lot of attention. And as a result, even though we're not a huge instance, we are one of the larger Calckey derived instances around.

lemmy.blahaj.zone on the other hand has seen crazy growth! In the last week, our lemmy instance has gone from almost no members, to nearly as many users as our Calckey instance. The mind blowing part though, is that the lemmy instance isn't even close to being one of the largest lemmy instances. We don't even appear on the first page of Fediverse Observer! And the sheer number of lemmy instances online now is huge compared to where it was a couple of weeks ago.

And that's before we even talk about kbin and the threadiverse as a whole, of which Lemmy is only a part

I can honestly say that this whole thing has shifted my view of just what the future of the fediverse might be. I assumed it would always be microblogging centric, but now, I question that...

Meta (owner of Facebook, Instagram & WhatsApp) is joining the fediverse very soon and have to seriously prepare. This isn't a theoretical scenario anymore.

"One of Meta’s top executives showed employees a preview of the company’s upcoming Twitter competitor during a companywide meeting today" via https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/8/23754304/instagram-meta-twitter-competitor-threads-activitypub
The photo shows what seems to be a fake conversation with @tonyg with the full @mastodon.social handle visible in two places.

I heard once that the case for which instance (for any federated app, be it Lemmy or Mastodon etc) on which to sign up is to choose based on "administration" not subject. That is to say, it is better to experience the fediverse through moderation and other administrative decisions than it is to do so on a server that is "subject based." Thoughts?

My experience with the Fediverse has only been through Mastodon, through which I struggled to find a community I really gelled with. Either it was supper overwhelming with meme posts or NSFW, or it was too chill to the point of nothing. Or, it was hyperfocused like FOSS/Linux and became uninteresting after awhile. May try again, but I think I will explore the other fedisites like Plemora or Calckey to see if I like it better.

I love the pace of a forum. I grew up primarily with GameFAQS and some lucid dreaming forum, and honestly it was very formative in teaching me how to write and use critical thinking skills, as well as how to respond to a variety of temperaments. I stopped participating in online forums awhile ago, and while I loved Reddit as a resource, I never felt inspired to participate. In the same way, there are an incredible number of forums dedicated to a certain topic, and are extremely valuable, it would be annoying to make an account for all the things I am interested in.

I like what lemmy is becoming. Glad to find system that makes interacting with people enjoyable.

I'm not sure if there is news for music so I thought I might as well as set it up if there isn't any.

I have been trying to get access to my feed for most of the day, and I am just getting timed out messages and no feeds. Anyone else part of this instance? Can you confirm if it is alive.

I really like calckey but the stability has me thinking about switching back to vanilla Mastodon.

If you have thoughts on the direction of the Discourse ActivityPub plugin, they are working on phase 2 of the specification now and are requesting feedback:

You can help by boosting my toot, but when offering help, the SocialHub forum discussion is the best place to do so.

Hi there! I am pretty new to the Fediverse, spinning up an account on Mastodon in November of last year, moving to Calckey about 1.5 months ago.

I do photography, which I share on Calckey, but I thought I would also go into Pixelfed. I believe you can follow accounts / link them somehow from both services. However whenever I search for my Pixelfed account on Calckey, it cannot find the user.

Or am I just completely misunderstanding how it works. I created my pixelfed account on Pixelfed.social, and I actually follow a few people from that instance on my Calckey account, which is when I got very confused.

What's stopping us from using the api to post all of reddit here in a massive one-time merger?

Obviously the Lemmy devs would have to do it, but would there be legal issues? I think it would solve most of the problems with Lemmy, really.

As Reddit's enshittification reaches new heights their attempts to suppress attention for alternatives, like federated Lemmy, has the opposite effect as this Hacker News discussion shows.

Hi all,

In reddit, I used to use /r/watercolor

How can I link to the 'watercolor' community here in lemmy?

Thank you

So, I experimented with running a mastodon instance on another domain. Due to issues with the "cache" directory actually requiring persistence, and thus somehow making all custom emojis 404, I decided to wipe it and try a different fediverse server on that domain. I didn't know about or expect to need to run tootctl self-destruct, so I dropped the database and installed something else. I still have the instance key around, but I realize I should have unsubscribed/deleted all accounts first. Is my other domain now broken permanently for the fediverse? Can I somehow use the extant instance key to unbreak it? I can't find clear documentation of the mastodon cryptosystem, and if it's permanent, this feels like a denial-of-service vector more than a security feature...

How do I mute/block annoying hashtags? I went into my settings menu and filtered out #AnnoyingPhrase should I not have used the #? Is there something else I should do? @fediverse
