I've wanted a badge that shows the instance uptime and couldn't find any, so I created one. It's available at https://uptime.lemmings.world/{your-domain}.svg and gets its data from fediverse.observer.

Examples:

The documentation is available at https://uptime.lemmings.world. Feel free to use it for your instance if you wish to.

Regardless of the negative aspects, Meta joining the Fediverse will definitely make the numbers of active users explode. This will probably bring the network and its concepts to many people and also a matter of public debate.

Hosted on peertube by the biggest instance in the fediverse, the event of the year takes place on the day of the first big twitter migration and is traditionally kicked off by someone telling a really bad joke and then declaring "let that sink in". But seriously - Would we be already able to realize this this year? Would be fun to celebrate the diversity of communities in the fediverse.

Searching for #PeerTube in #Bing and thus #DuckDuckGo gives zero results. Bind mentions that "The search result may have adult contents has been filtered." and that "age verification is required". While DuckDuckGo just shows zero results.

I understand that there might be PeerTube instances with adult content in the search results but I don't believe all of them have adult content. I know mine does not.

Fedipunk means a story in a universe, in which the era of dezentralized social networks is already there, with all its potential consequences - or we see the transition to it.

From what I read in earlier posts and my own thinking I propose the following ones (new suggestions are of course welcome):

  • Planet Magnon by Leif Randt (socialism, distributed social network, decentral communities)
  • Mars Trilogy Book 2 by Kim Stanley Robinson (collaborative government strategies)
  • Half-Built Garden by (socialism, distributed social network, decentral communities)
  • His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (decentral factions, openings between different parallel universes which begin to merge, remote communication over magic substance)

What do you think of this? Do you think it is a good idea and could take off?

The fediseer now allows instance admins to self-tag their instance as they want. Those tags can then be consumed via the API.

For example, one could use these tags to discover all instances focusing one or more topics at the same time. Places like pangora.social can use them to find more instances to suggest in their lists.

On the flip side, instance admins can also use them to help improve their blocklists in a "positive" manner. For example, let's say that you want your instance to be SFW, you could explicitly block any instance self reporting as "porn" or "gore" etc. Along with the endorsements and hesitations, this would provide a lot of tools to ensure you associate only with the people you fit well.

You can add or delete tags in the GUI or directly via the API as an instance admin

The new tags_csv arg on the /whitelist endpoint, will also return all instances which match any of the tags in your csv.

Let us know what you think and remember you can support the fediseer development on liberapay. Alternatively you can also sponsor the individual developers on github: db0 | rikudou

Currently lemmy is like the speedboat next to the heavy steam boat of Mastodon etc. While lemmy is still dynamic and flexible and can introduce new features easily without scaring off its established user base, mastodon can not do such experiments so easily. Now, if lemmy gains more momentum in the fediverse and establishes features, which other services don't have, it could really push innovation in the Fediverse further. What do you think?

How should I do this?

I understand not all videos get mirrored.

Can I create accounts on multiple instances and prompt them to mirror each other? What instances should I focus on?

My Lemmy Schedule app now includes the option to get notified of new posts in a specific community!

In case you haven't heard about the app before, here's what other things it can do:

  • schedule a post and post it to multiple communities
    • you can upload an image as well and choose between uploading to your Lemmy instance or to Imgur
  • create a recurring post that gets posted at a specific date and time (especially useful for daily/weekly/monthly/end-of-month threads)
  • schedule pinning and unpinning of posts (instance and community)
    • the pinning and unpinning can be specified as part of creating a post
  • the aforementioned notifications about unread posts from a specific community (useful for mods)
    • can be also set using a recurring schedule, so you can get the report daily/weekly/monthly etc.

To learn more, visit the !schedule@lemmings.world community.

P.S. It's open source and can be self-hosted using docker!

Today I learnt that at beehaw.org you don't really have to break any instance/community rules to have your comments removed by the admin. In their wiki page they wrote over the top, corporate-sounding articles about how "Beehaw aspires to be a diverse place" where "everyone plays an important role in that mission", how they are against Reddit-style power mods and in favour of fair moderation, but the reality seems to be quite the opposite.

I'm really glad Lemmy is not Reddit and there's always plenty of alternatives, which makes me appreciate Lemmy even more. No more yellow icons on my communities subscription list. 🏸🐝

I'm not yet fully sure what pirate crews are but they are somehow heavily build on open-source software and they protect minorities and distribute wealth but put more focus on free speech and self sufficiency. Jesus Houses also distribute wealth (but not as much) and protect minorities way less (we are speaking about progressive christians here). Work spaces can protect minorities but not as much and they can also distribute wealth but also not as much.

Hi Boost gang,

The first version of Boost for Lemmy is almost ready. If you want to test the app for bugs and give feedback before the app is published, follow this link https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.rubenmayayo.lemmy to enable an early access option on the Boost for Lemmy Play Store listing.

Thanks for your patience!

Just passing on a tip from FediTips I didn't know about. Using the format

(server)/tags/(hashtag without the #).rss

Your RSS Reader can follow hashtags e.g.

https://mstdn.social/tags/dogs.rss

You can see everything with the hashtag 'dogs' on mstd.social and every instance mstdn.social can see.

You guys have been so awesome providing a list of Fedi clients. I will update the list based on you guys feedback. I ask for assistance once again. I want to make a running list of Fediverse projects. There are so many interesting projects that deserve attention and devs that deserve recognition. I will start off with some that I use and find to be beneficial and awesome. β€’ ActivityPods: https://activitypods.org/ β€’ Fediview: https://fediview.com/ β€’ Fed bridgy : https://fed.brid.gy β€’ Combine.social : https://combine.social/ β€’ Instances.social: https://instances.social/ β€’ Audon: https://audon.space/login β€’ Fediverse Report: https://fediversereport.com/last-week-in-fediverse-episode-35/ β€’ Wedistribute : https://wedistribute.org/ β€’ privacy nexus today: https://privacy.thenexus.today/ β€’ Artisans coop: https://artisans.coop/ β€’ join Fediverse : https://jointhefediverse.net/ β€’ Alt Text HOF: https://alttexthalloffame.org/ β€’ Sefan Fediverse : https://stefanbohacek.com/tag/fediverse/ β€’ Stefan bots : https://stefanbohacek.com/tag/bots/ β€’ Fediverse connections: https://data.stefanbohacek.dev/projects/fediverse β€’ Fedidb : https://fedidb.org/network β€’ Pubkit : https://pubkit.net/ β€’ Sup : https://github.com/theSupApp

From the Average Lemmy Servers Online by Day graph

  • 18th September: 1224
  • 19th September: 1002

Does anyone know more about this? Seems a bit strange to have all of them going down on the same day

The number of subscribers listed in the sidebar is only the number of users from YOUR instance that are subscribed. This might make you feel like a community is 'small' or 'dead' when it actually isn't.

I also started to forget this till I was playing with the shields.io badges earlier and the numbers didn't match up.

Here are some examples:

!fediverse@lemmy.world

  • My instance will see 310 subscribers
  • This instance will see 22.6K subscribers

!canada@lemmy.ca

  • My instance will see 6.03K subscribers
  • This instance will see 1.49K subscribers

Now my question is, what's an accurate way to see the total number of subscribers? Is it in the home instance for a particular community?

If so, it might be worth adding the badges to the sidebars.

(!fediverse@lemmy.world)

(!asklemmy@lemmy.ml)

(!games@sh.itjust.works)

(!canada@lemmy.ca)

(!communitypromo@lemmy.ca)

(!houseplants@mander.xyz)

To do this quickly, go to https://shields.io/badges/lemmy and enter:

  • myCommunity@example.com for community
  • lemmy for logo
  • Total Subscribers for label
  • modify the colors and style as you like

You can also modify the community and instance here and paste it in:

![](https://img.shields.io/lemmy/fediverse%40lemmy.world?logo=lemmy&label=Total%20Subscribers)

swap the fediverse%40lemmy.world portion
