Most instances have a support community for discussing technical issues with that particular server.

As each instance names these slightly differently, I thought I'd create a thread to collect as many as possible.

Lemmy:

Mbin:

PieFed:

Please comment below with equivalent communities and I'll add them to the list.

I would also recommend that instance admins include a link to their meta/support community in the sidebar of their instance.

On a somewhat related note, do any instance admins still have Reddit accounts they would be willing to reveal here?

I've come across many Redditors who are interested in Lemmy but give up after experiencing issues on signup. I think the ability to have instance admins reach out to users on Reddit directly could be a useful tool in reducing the friction of the Lemmy onboarding process.

If you are an instance admin and are comfortable sharing your Reddit username, please do so below.

I have a draft designed for all types of fediverse software, but i narrowed it down to just threadiverse stuff

This is a guide meant to be linked for beginners, to explain the fediverse in as short time as possible.

Concepts

What's "federation"?

In easy terms; it's a concept where instances seamlessly integrate with each other. Users can talk to each other and participate in their communities. For example, my account is on lemm.ee and the community i am posting to is on slrpnk.net, yet i feel no friction.

What's an instance?

An instance is a server running software, with users, and communities, etc. (Each of these is like a mini-reddit/twitter/etc!) The software part is important, since instances can either be forums, microblogs, video-sharing sites, etc etc. And they can all interact with each other!

What's the "fediverse"?

The fediverse (federation + universe) is a coalition of federated instances running all types of different software, so a user from a forum instance (lemmy) can interact with a user from a microblog instance (mastodon)

Another example is bluesky, but that uses a different protocol, and is much less effective than ActivityPub.

A picture of bluesky, representing how users can interact from different instances.

Why should i use the fediverse over normal social media?

Many reasons. A few:

  • it can never truly die - People can always create software and run instances, and if one goes down, the others will still be up.

  • No one person controls the fediverse. We are all on equal grounds.

  • Unlike corporations who back social media platforms, fedi is 100% ran by normal people. You can talk to developers, instance hosters, the mods, all as normal people, and they (unless you use their server) have no control over you.

  • There is no need to appeal to advertisers

  • Freedom of choice. Disagree with an instance's values, or a developer's? Easy, defederate or just don't use their software. You will still have the fediverse as a whole accessible to you, without the parts you do not like.

I'm convinced! How do i begin?

Excellent!

First you must choose what software you want your instance of choosing to run:

  • Lemmy if you care about apps
  • Piefed if you care about features/fast development, or a lightweight instance
  • Mbin if you want both your blog and forum account in the same place

Instances

Lemmy

Piefed

Mbin

Apps/clients [everything after this point is optional]

some people may not like the default frontends or want to access their instance through mobile, here is a curated list:

Lemmy

Mbin

Communities

Here are some good community recommendations, based on topics:

Memes

Software

Politics

Casual

Knowledge

History

Animals

Art

Postface

That's about all there's left for you; have fun!

Finally... im done writing this...

When you want to share a image you found on PieFed, don't download and share the image, just share the PieFed link.
This way the people or person you're sharing it with might discover PieFed without you pushing it.

It also works great like this https://www.reddit.com/r/AskTheWorld/comments/1md2npo/what_is_the_best_power_outlet_and_why
(does not work with old.reddit )

This will also improve SEO, and PieFed etc. might start popping up on search engine results more, and people will start to see and trust the Fediverse more.

You can find the feedback form on the bottom of the search results. Please ask them to consider using Mastodon, Peertube, Loops and Friendica.

In case people aren't aware, the annual Fediverse Canvas pixel-placing event is this weekend, starting at July 12th at 4am UTC.

!canvas@toast.ooo

Might this provide opportunities to promote the Fediverse on Reddit, either in something like r/RedditAlternatives, or in individual subreddits?

It could provide a change from the usual "you should try this Reddit alternative" to "come participate in this fun event, and by the way, it's also a Reddit alternative".

While the remaining redditors aren't always the easiest folks to convince to switch over, I feel like there's still a fair bit of love for r/place on the platform. How can we make the most of this?

So far I've been able to ask the following subs to add links to various comparable Lemmy communities:

https://www.reddit.com/r/tycoon/ (I am a long-time contributor here)

https://www.reddit.com/r/adventuregames/

Don't know if it makes much of a difference, but it can't hurt SEO.

I've also reached out to the citybuilder subreddit, but they ignored my message.

Some other genre-specific Lemmy communities that are active (unfortunately, it's mostly me posting, but not always):

Help out if you feel like it or you are a regular on a relevant game genre subreddit.

Now that Voyager supports PieFed, when promoting the Fediverse on Reddit I will be using this going forward

Try out the decentralised Reddit alternative called PieFed, https://piefed.social/
It also has a mobile app: https://vger.app/settings/install

I use it alongside Reddit, and I'm enjoying it more and more, slowly switching over

Some of the biggest complaints people switching over have are

  • Not sure which server to choose
  • No onboarding
  • Too much politics
  • Trouble logging in
  • Bad UX/UI (for a lot of people)

PieFed solves all of this, it has good onboarding, login is real easy you can even login with google, during onboarding you can filter out trump/musk spam, UX/UI is lightyears better for your average user, it has de-duplication etc.

So I wrote a blog post on how I feel we can encourage more people to fedi, and it starts with DON'T TELL PEOPLE ABOUT THE FEDIVERSE, because I'm very clever, or something. Would be happy to get your thoughts on that!

I've been working on a guide to getting started on Lemmy. What do you think I should add?

Just for any people in the future who may be looking at it.

Well, actually, PieFed.social has enabled it's API which means that the Android app Interstellar can be used with it. Find out more about the app at https://interstellar.jwr.one/.

Later today https://feddit.online/, another PF instance, will enable the API too and I expect others will follow in good time.
