This award-winning documentary reveals the diverse ecology and controversial saga of the Grand Kankakee Marsh – an area in the Midwest that, less than a century ago, resembled the swamplands of Florida’s Everglades. Join the filmmakers as they explore the astonishing history of the environmental treasure often referred to as the “Everglades of the North.”

Not long ago, the Grand Kankakee Marsh saturated nearly a million acres across Northern Indiana and into a portion of Illinois. This unique ecological landscape was home to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the planet, with waterfowl so numerous they literally blackened the sky. Louis the XIV claimed this land as part of “New France,” and the marsh was once known as Chicago’s food pantry.

Many sought the riches of the marsh, including industrialists who made their fortunes from its seemingly endless natural resources. But it all came at the expense of the environment – today less than 5% of the Grand Kankakee Marsh has survived man’s advances. But with a better understanding of the important role wetlands play in the environment, there is a renewed effort to restore part of what was lost.

“Instead of investing to retain current employees or support former employees through their transition following a recent sizable layoff, Cresco is spending money on lawyers to monitor and sue its former employees for finding new jobs,” spokeswoman Rosie Mattio said in a statement. “This move is not only distasteful to their former employees looking to continue their careers in the cannabis industry, but also a total waste of Cresco’s capital and resources.”

Getting spicy at the top of the corporate cannabis ladder!

This is a great example of why non-compete clauses are anti-worker, and why you should grow-your-own (or find your local home-grower). If they weren't playing lawyer wars maybe they could drop their prices a little?

Fuck Cresco.

Anybody visit some good restaurants this weekend? I was able to check off a few restaurants I have been wanting to visit for a while now:

  1. Au Cheval - went to Small Cheval before but finally caved and waited for their burger. Honestly not the biggest burger fan but this was overall a really nice burger. The bacon was amazing. Don't know that I'd go out of my way to grab it again though. Likely I'd go to small cheval if I am really craving a good burger but if you're already in west loop and going to grab drinks before dinner definitely worth putting your name down.

  2. Rubi's on 18th - was in the area and decided on tacos, had a Carne Asada taco and an Al Pastor both with blue corn tortillas. Their tortillas are made to order and delicious! The salsas were phenomenal as well especially the salsa verde. I preferred the Asada while my GF preferred the Al Pastor. Both were really good though.

  3. Monster Ramen - had their summer special a spicy shio ramen and it killed. One of the best bowls in the city no doubt. Made with limes and sesame and was the perfect amount. Noodles were awesome as well. High five ramen holds a special place in my heart though but its pretty close. Different types of ramen so no tonkotsu there but their shio was definitely the best shio I have had.

How about you? Any good meals this weekend?

I noticed this outlined and shaded region in Gold Coast near Oak St Beach on Google maps, but don't know why it's shaded. Anyone have ideas?

“He said [it] tasted like that junk drawer that everybody has in their kitchen, and that just seemed so insane to me,” Mechling said. The idea that a drink could be so off-putting seemed improbable, but as soon as Mechling tasted it, he knew the description wasn’t an exaggeration.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and other officials announced Thursday that Chicago commuter operator Metra had been selected to partner with Union Pacific to provide two daily rail roundtrips between Rockford and Chicago by 2027.

This community needs an icon and a banner! Thoughts on the lovely chicago flag for the icon? Or maybe something more square

Howdy all,

I took Amtrak from Milwaukee to Pittsburgh and back over the past week, stopping in Chicago during my layover each way. The North Concourse still allowed seating by the departure gates, but the South Concourse was blocked off for seating unlike last year. Employees had us wait in the Great Hall and then get escorted down when it was time to depart. Now, I much prefer waiting in the Great Hall than by the gates, but I'm curious, is there some sort of renovation going on? All the employees I asked about it didn't know the reason behind the closure.

I still feel like total shit, can't tell if it's just my allergies or if I should still be blaming the air quality.

I was testing out the zoom on my phone and snapped this picture through the haze from the Canadian wildfires.

Currently there are five PRO nascar posts:

  • I invite everyone to turn on the NASCAR TV broadcast
  • NASCAR crew members help fix a car's bumper after it was involved in a fender bender across from the garage area on Lake Shore Drive
  • Unpopular Opinion, but i think the NASCAR races will be awesome
  • OK Chicago, this Nascar thing is fun, Now do Formula 1
  • This checks out…(Randy Sax guerilla marketing link)

and three ANTI nascar:

  • Meanwhile, we’re doing 15mph on 90/94
  • Worker dies while setting up Chicago NASCAR race
  • Chicago’s Nascar Weekend Offers Headaches, Little Economic Gain

Two of the pro-nascar posts are obvious guerilla marketing (the "LSD pit crew repair" post and whatever that Randy Sax thing is). One of the Anti-articles is just news about an unfortunate event.

I think Nascar has hired social media PR/sock puppet groups to astroturf Chicago reddit. I wonder if it's the same people Paul Vallas hired...

Hi all, anyone have recommendations for fun bars and restaurants in the south loop area? I am moving there soon and it would be nice to have a few places within walking distance, since most of the ones I know would be a subway ride away.
