I enjoy biking here and encourage anybody interested to start biking as a form of transportation but hopefully these studies push us to resolve the issues that still exist!

So, back when I was about 9/10 ish (1999) I remember going to museum with my grandparents that contained a few key things that stood with me over 2 decades later.

The first, and creepiest was an animatronic of a homeless/drug addict in an alley or on a bench. This is the “anchor” memory, it’s hard to forget such a creepy thing.

The second was a more hands on focused kids area where I spent a majority of my time.

The last was a restaurant with some TVs installed around the eating area somewhere in the building - I distinctly seeing ads for the new Tarzan movie, so I’m thinking this was the summer of 99ish.

It could also have been the Chicago Childrens Museum, but when looking at older pictures absolutely nothing stands out to me as memorable - additionally they don’t have any on-site restaurants that I can see from my research.

After lots of internet sleuthing, I think but can’t confirm, that it is the Museum of Science and Industry. Some of the pictures of some of the exhibits seem really familiar.

I suppose the key thing preventing my brain from saying “This is the one” is lack of anyone else mentioning such an animatronic at any of these places.

I asked my grandma, but she’s pretty deep in dementia and doesn’t really recall those experiences anymore. 😢

So /c/Chicago, are any of you old enough to remember such an exhibit from 99? If so, what museum was that?

I booked with a bicycle on Hiawatha last weekend and Amtrak called me two hours before departure to tell me that they were cancelling the bicycle reservation. When I went down to MKE intermodal to see what they could do for me, they told me they'd honor the reservation. :)

Chicago railroads, a return of the king?

If you want to run a railroad, you should be on it. These fat-cat elites are far removed from the real life of public transportation. The biggies are too busy, their matters too important, to bother with the CTA. They have no clue about what it’s like to search for safety on a train car as the thieves and miscreants prey on riders. They don’t face the fear of standing in a bus shelter, alone at night, waiting for the ghost bus that never comes.

Amen.

Anyone know who MBJ is working with to replace Gia Biagi?

The merger would have created the nation’s largest cannabis firm...

...Cresco Labs is the largest wholesaler of branded cannabis products in the U.S. It operates dispensaries in seven states, including 10 retail locations and three cultivation labs in Illinois.

Columbia Care is one of the original multi-state providers of medical cannabis in the U.S. It operates 126 facilities, including 94 dispensaries and 32 cultivation and manufacturing facilities.

I've been a little out of touch with the news in the Illinois marker and didn't realize this was even slated to happen. Great that it didn't though, consolidation is never good for consumers.

  • Developing a citywide network of bus rapid transit and dedicated bus lanes
  • Lowering speed limits to 20 mph on arterial streets and 10 mph on residential streets
  • Restricting right turns on red lights
  • Creating a connected and protected bike network
  • Developing a network of neighborhood slow streets
  • Creating a multi-disciplinary response to support the safety, health, and housing needs of people on transit
  • Working towards a municipal Plow the Sidewalks program
  • Limiting commercial traffic on residential streets
  • Citywide curb management program that addresses needs for deliveries, drop-offs, and accessibility
  • Adding new customer support personnel such as “transit ambassadors” to CTA’s staff
  • Better coordination among transportation agencies at different levels of government

Would be really great if MBJ lowered the speed limit citywide, eliminated rights on red, and expands alternative modes of transport like BRT and bicycle network

We should not be redefining The Drive, we should be reimagining our lakefront. We can NOT rebuild a highway on our lake, especially not in the face of a global climate crisis and traffic violence epidemic across our nation.

At the same time, the Chicago Park District is working on a new plan to revitalize Grant Park, our front yard. We want to make sure that in the 2023 Grant Park Framework Plan measures are taken to calm and limit traffic through the park while increasing pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Our lakefront is one of Chicago's, and our region's, most cherished treasures and assets. We should respect it and respect all Chicagoans by investing in an active transportation corridor that provides safe access to our lake and our city.

We need new metrics for these projects so we can minimize Vehicle Miles Traveled, minimize vehicle emissions, and maximize accessibility and green space. We can do this by improving cyclist and pedestrian safety with raised bike paths and raised crosswalks, and increase access to the lakefront and parks. Maximizing access to the lakefront will require infrastructure, facilities, and programming that integrate Universal Design principles.

Adding more lanes to this highway or any highway won't fix congestion, it hasn't worked for decades. We need active transportation options like protected BRT or light rail which can move more people than any highway ever could.

Call on Rep. Ann Williams to:

  • Restart this flawed decade-long process

  • Eliminate the false sense of need for a highway on our lakefront.

  • Consider our climate, people, and environment when thinking about what our lakefront should look like. The current process does none of those things in a meaningful way.

  • Continue re-imagining by bringing more green spaces and better transit to the entire lakefront, for ALL Chicagoans.

Hope they reduce the speed limit in the city to 25 and use the revenue to support the CTA, bicycle stuff, and better pedestrian crossings.

More overtime was credited to NASCAR than any other special event so far this summer except the Pride Parade, for which officers were credited with 31,297 hours. The 2023 Pride Parade crowd estimate was nearly a million people; NASCAR projected it would attract about 100,000 attendees over the course of the weekend.

Lumpen Radio and International Anthem are doing a really interesting 24hr broadcast on Lumpen featuring some local (and not) heavyweights, like Star Creature and Numero, starting tonight at midnight and ending with a live preference by two local jazz giants; Damon Locks and Rob Mazurek, tomorrow night at 9.

Some local record shops will also be broadcasting it in store as well( including, 606, pinwheel, reckless, and more)

Should be a good listen 📻

From the email:

TOMORROW IS LISTENING will be available on terrestrial FM radio in the Chicago area via Lumpen Radio (105.5 FM); but more importantly, we have a growing list of independent record shops across the globe who will be tuning in.
That means: you can properly participate in this special day by leaving your solo reality tunnel, heading out IRL and listening to this broadcast in the community of friends and fellow music lovers at the cultural/communal sanctuary of your local record shop. The list of shops who will be tuned to the broadcast gets bigger by the minute.

This emergency alert flashed on my phone as I was heading into the Jane Byrne from the Ryan. Anyone on here see any of the drills?
