uhhh why do we not have c/piracy? straw-hat-pirates

We are open to ideas on how to foster community and explore ideas. Feel free to message us on Twitter or Reddit. Perhaps we could host some sort of forum or chat group. One challenge is that this can easily get censored when using common platforms, so we would have to host it ourselves. There is also a tradeoff between having these discussions fully public (more potential engagement) versus making it private (not letting potential "targets" know that we're about to scrape them). We'll have to think about that. Let us know if you are interested in this!

We should invite them to Hexbear

Consequently, hosting a lavish banquet or ordering lobster is no longer a sufficient signifier of status; today, a sign of true wealth is the ability to forgo food entirely. Eating essentially betrays a person’s most basic human needs; in an era obsessed with ‘self-optimisation’, not eating suggests that a person is somehow ‘beyond’ needs and has achieved total mastery of their body with a heightened capacity for efficiency and focus.

“There is a history in Judeo-Christian societies – and likely in many other religions, hence the widespread practice of fasting – where demonstrating a lack of need for material things, especially food, and being able to demonstrate self-control and discipline are signs of spiritual transcendence,” Dr Woolhouse says. Famously, Italian saint Catherine of Siena would fast for prolonged periods of time as a means of demonstrating her devotion to God through extreme self-control. “But there’s also a class dimension to this,” Dr Woolhouse continues, “because being able to demonstrate a lack of need for material goods, like food, suggests social transcendence too; it’s symbolic of living a life whereby our material needs aren’t a daily concern.” She adds that “fad diets are very unlikely to take off in societies where there are food shortages or food insecurity.”

It’s still jarring to watch celebrities openly admit to fasting for 23 hours a day or taking 14 different supplement pills in lieu of a balanced breakfast. “It normalises and sanctions practises that in other contexts would be regarded as eating disordered,” Dr Woolhouse says. “When eating practices are packaged as ‘done in the name of health’, they are more socially acceptable and difficult to contest.” She points out that a normal teenage girl restricting her diet in the same way as Johnson would likely be regarded as ill and in need of medical intervention. “What we, as a society, regard as ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ eating is contextual and largely rides on how those eating practices are framed.”

It’s obvious but bears reiterating that extreme, fad diet trends are both ineffectual and dangerous. But this trend isn’t really about food or health. It’s about performance. It’s a way for the moneyed classes to signal their wealth and status and posture as above us mere mortals who debase ourselves by eating.

I watched a Japanese video about the ~~awful~~ classic 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie since I was curious about how it was viewed from a Japanese perspective. Disney's involvement in the movie's production is mentioned at which point the author jokes that "if today's Disney was in charge, Mario would probably be made into a black guy"

I love how everyone's brains are being pickled by the same shitty American culture wars worldwide

The comments were also great

"Toad could work as a black person because his head kind of resembles an afro"

"Italians are already considered a minority in America so they wouldn't need to change him into a black man"

The best part about learning new languages is being able to read even more racist comments on the internet

His mentions chickens as a reason he's running. Yes, really.

George Santos Explains Why He's Raised $0 for Return Congressional Bid

And he is not running as a Republican, rather he is running as an independent and is attempting to get on the general election ballot. [...] Exactly why Santos is running is unclear. He has denied his bid against LaLota is a revenge tour and rather claimed he is running in a new district because he and his husband want to own chickens in their backyard.

“My husband and I both enjoy that kind of life. We’re dying to have a chicken coop and stuff like that, and in Suffolk County it’s much easier to get that,” Santos told The Daily Beast earlier this month. “In Nassau County, it’s full of restrictions on where and how much, and can you get chickens and can you get roosters because of neighbors and noise and that stuff.”

Regardless of his stated reasons for running against LaLota, it’s still personal. On a number of occasions Santos has expressed his disdain for LaLota. Prior to his expulsion, Santos held a pen and pad and stood with reporters in the Capitol, where he called LaLota a “meathead” and explicitly said “I don’t like Nick LaLota.” “He’s not well-liked. He’s an arrogant person. He’s not a nice guy. He’s cocky,” Santos told reporters. “He’s a traditional meathead, somebody who’s not nice to you for no reason.”

If Santos does get on the general election ballot, it could pose an issue for Republicans as he could siphon away votes from LaLota in a district Democrats would like to flip. But in order to make the ballot Santos still needs to obtain enough petition signatures from district residents, something some experts think remains unlikely.

It's during his NYC trial.

Sleeping while on duty

In Japan, the practice of napping in public, called inemuri (居眠り, lit. "present while sleeping"), may occur in work meetings or classes. Brigitte Steger, a scholar who focuses on Japanese culture, writes that sleeping at work is considered a sign of dedication to the job, such that one has stayed up late doing work or worked to the point of complete exhaustion, and may therefore be excusable.
