I will crosspost this to lemmy.world, only fill out one ballot please. Week 0 is in the books, let's see how this shakes up our polling. As previously discussed I will be posting the results on Wednesday of each week. Mods is there an appetite to make the results reflected in the banner?

Due to alleged recruiting violations under Herm Edwards during the 2020 dead period.

From the article:

"Arizona State University has informed the NCAA and Pac-12 conference that it will self-impose a one-year postseason ban on its football program for the upcoming season," Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson said in a statement. "In light of the ongoing investigation and our membership obligation to maintain the confidentiality of the matter, we will not be commenting further at this time."

In advance of today's games, I thought I would share my own FBS poll. Feel free to chime in with your own rankings in this thread! If there's enough interest, maybe we can eventually create our own poll system for this community.

First, I should state this is purely a computer poll. (I'm not intentionally disrespecting any teams!) Think of it more like a power rating. Secondly, it is the pre-season so it's kind of a shot in the dark. I definitely could adjust things (e.g. Alabama & Oregon State are too low; Louisville & Maryland seem strangely high) but then bias can creep in. I've been doing my own rankings for 5 years, making slight tweaks to the algorithm along the way, but had to overhaul it recently in the transfer portal era so there may still be kinks to be ironed out.

Without further ado:

Happy Saturday everyone, and welcome to the start of the 2023 College Football Season! I don’t have the bot running yet for CFB threads but I will try to manually post threads for the games today (and at least the ND and USC games).

I hope we see some increased discussion with the start of the season. If you feel like we are missing some weekly threads that r/cfb offers, be the change you want to see! I am still the only mod here and will need some help to keep the content flowing. Anyways, here is our lineup for today!

From the article:

The Ivy League team defeated Japan, 24-20, in the inaugural game last season.

Japan’s National Football Association invited the Ivy League to once again participate in the event with the goal of growing the game of football in Japan.

The league’s 52-person roster will be comprised of senior and graduate student-athletes from all eight Ivy League programs. The squad will be led by Brown head coach James Perry. The Japan All-Star team will be a combined team of X League (Japan’s top American football league) players, including nine Americans, college players and crossover sport athletes.

The game will be held on January 20 at 11 p.m. EST in the United States (Sunday, January 21 at 1 p.m. JST locally) at the National Stadium, site of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

From the article:

U.S. Reps. Garret Graves, R-La. and Mark Pocan, D-Wis. made the announcement as co-chairs stating that they wish to protect "the integrity of these treasured venues … while enhancing their capabilities."

...

The 18 stadiums:

  • Beaver Stadium (Penn State)
  • Camp Randall Stadium (Wisconsin)
  • Cotton Bowl
  • Davis Wade Stadium (Mississippi State)

From the article:

Markazi noted that former USC athletic director Mike Bohn had told him he wanted to re-retire Bush’s number. USC recently hired Jen Cohen from Washington to be athletic director and Markazi reported that a ceremony to honor the former star “will come sooner than expected” under her leadership.

He also noted that the display of USC Heisman winners jersey numbers in the Coliseum has been rearranged. This is to be expected with current quarterback Caleb Williams having his jersey number, No. 13, festooned in the Coliseum. But Markazi posted a photo that has space for a pair of numbers to be retired.

And only two USC Heisman winners aren’t currently recognized in the display: Williams and Bush.

Everyone knows that the only ranking that matters is, of course, the Sickos Committee poll. Voted on by their 93,000 followers, the Sickos Committee released their official preseason top-30 ranking!

There is a certain badge of honor that comes with being a high-ranking member of the Sickos Community. It certainly does not make you a bad team, there are actually a good amount of ranked teams who will do quite well this year. It just means that you are truly upholding the standard of college football.
