Advantages of GDPR for End Users

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a landmark privacy law that offers several advantages to end users, particularly those who may be unaware of their data rights:

  1. Increased Control Over Personal Data: GDPR empowers individuals by giving them the right to access, correct, and even delete their personal data held by companies.

  2. Transparency: Companies must clearly communicate how they collect, use, and share personal data. This transparency helps users understand the implications of sharing their information.

  3. Consent: GDPR mandates that companies obtain explicit consent from users before collecting and processing their data. This ensures that users are aware of and agree to data collection practices.

  4. Data Protection: GDPR enforces stringent security measures to protect personal data from breaches and unauthorized access.

  5. Right to Be Forgotten: Users can request that their data be erased, providing a way to remove personal information from the internet.

Comparison with American and Chinese Software

  • United States: The U.S. does not have a comprehensive federal law equivalent to GDPR. Instead, it relies on a patchwork of sector-specific laws and regulations. This can lead to less protection and transparency for users, as companies have more leeway in how they handle personal data.

  • China: China's approach to data privacy is significantly different. The Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) aims to protect personal data but is often criticized for its lack of enforcement and the government's extensive surveillance capabilities. Users in China may face challenges in exercising their data rights due to these factors.

Hello everyone! A few days ago I set up a small server on Revolt. Itโ€™s a Discord alternative, so there are different channels to chat, share products and ideas, ask questions, etc.

If anyone is interested in meeting and hanging out with like-minded folks, come say hi! There are currently 40 members. Lots of room to grow and develop into an active little community. Cheers

Mentioned by nightm4re I would really love for this thingy to skyrocket.

And yes, I know.... I know.. drop in replacement, usability, acceptance. Is a simple monkey not allowed to dream?

I love my Rotpunkt vacuum jug, ngl. If you fill it up with hot tea and close it properly, it's still hot enough to burn your tongue a day later, it's amazing. It's Made in Germany.

I wanted to highlight one of my favorites: Repeat Audio (formerly Gerrard Street). Theyโ€™ve been pioneers in modular, fully circular headphonesโ€”100% Dutch design (TU Delft), one of my friends who studied there put me onto this.

Since 2014, theyโ€™ve been recycling broken parts and offering free repairs for life with a no-questions-asked policy. Iโ€™ve been a customer since 2016, swapped a few parts over the years, and even got a free upgrade when they rebranded. Had a great chat with one of the founders back then, which only made me more of a fan.

They were doing modular headphones long before some bigger names jumped on the concept. Repeat is now getting some pretty big national artists jumping in to support their mission, so Iโ€™m hoping theyโ€™ll do cool collabs and swap-outs in the future.

Does anyone have experience with them?

Are there any alternatives to the usual Homepod/Sonos speakers for Airplay connectivity? I want to avoid using an airplay dongle in the kitchen, thatโ€™s already my setup in the living room, but here space is a concern.

Thus, is Yamaha the only non-US option or are there any EU-made speakers with built in Airplay?

I support the goal and fully understand the frustration with the USA right now and it's great that there are so many lists of alternatives popping up, but to those creating them, maybe consider organising yourselves. You are recreating the same database every time and it might be time to unify efforts so that all these disparate efforts can move forward together more quickly.

Extensions, posters, websites, and so on could all build upon the database.

Found on r/buyFromEU: a promo video by our Polish neighbours. It can be enjoyed with subtitles.

Overall, I think it is a nice campaign and shows some products and inventions you wouldn't associate with Poland at a frist glimpse.

Is there any? Iโ€™m located in Finland and trying to find one. I just bought Sensodyne, which I believed would be European, but seems to be American, according to Wikipedia?

Yesterday I came across a thread where people were asking about Discord alternatives and there it was - glorious Revolt which looks great. Now Iam wondering if we as a community could / should create an Revolut server where we can discuss stuff in real-time. Maybe even coordinate movement of European goods from one country to another - for example I've seen demand for a Kofola in next-door countries like Germany which could be easily faciliated. Also I could vice versa use import of products from other countries into small-shops where I know owners. What's your thought ?

Hello everyone,

I'm living in Germany and looking for a good PayPal alternative. I mainly need it for:

  • Sending money to friends
  • Paying online, especially to small vendors
  • Ordering food and everyday purchases

I've heard about Bunq, Klarna, Revolut, and N26, but I'm not sure which one would be best for my needs. Has anyone had experience with these services in Germany? Which would you recommend and why?

Thanks in advance!

I enjoy support journalism which is not commercially driven and am looking for European media. In Germany there is e.g. Jung und Naiv, taz or Riffreporter. But they all have a focus on german politics mainly i want more EU or Europe Politics. I thought about Guardian - they at least try to cover some European stuff.

I came across this website on Mastodon.

Switching.software

It doesn't have any European bias, seemingly, but it could be a resource for people interested in ditching the big US tech firms.
