Hi everyone! So, my niece is alsmost 6 years old and is very energetic and generaly active as a child. Her parents are thinking of sending her to either Karate or Tae Kwon Do, both for physical and spiritual exercise and development. Which one do you think could fit better for her age and also considering she likes it which is better in the long term?

I have off and on through the years downloaded some things by using magnet links from The Pirate Bay. I've been working on a nice NAS (DS923+) setup that is now running Jellyseerr, Jellyfin, QBittorrent, Radarr, and Sonarr. Everything seems to be linked up, and my media is being hosted a-okay. However, in order to get the Jellyseerr / Radarr / Sonarr bit working, I need proper indexers. I have never really understood this world. I know I need an invite, and I just missed a window with one. I'm trying to figure what is best and how to get in the in-crowd.

Can anybody instruct on how these trackers work when compared to just pulling from TPB. Also, how can one get hooked up with an invite. I didn't want to ask this on my main account for obvious reasons, but I'm sure many people could benefit from learning this too; especially as the media landscape gets worse and worse.

My posts are almost all visual content, and I've started including alt text in all my posts. Lemmy, Mbin and PieFed all support alt text with their default front ends, and Photon has it too. How good is my alt text? Am I writing too much or too little? Am I getting the necessary details and context across concisely enough? What can I change to make my alt text work better for you?

Only option for me at my workplace is either coffee (undrinkably bitter) or expired tea (tastes like rot). Did not have enough time yesterday to make myself tea for the next day and the shop where I buy energy drinks is closed. I extremely drownsy and my head hurts.

EDIT: Coffee is undrinkable to me, quality or not. The bitterness will just overpower everything.

I am trying to put together my own take on a low-distraction writer deck platform. The brain will be an SBC, either a Pi Zero or a "Le Potato" Pi 3 alternative, partly because neither has built in wifi, but more because I already have both of them. I'm not quite to a point where I want it truly minimal, but I would like the word processor to be "the" app that it can run.

Software wise, I'm looking at two early leaders. MS Word 5.5 running on DOSBox, or Wordgrinder. That version of Word is oddly nice, but I'd prefer to have something run without needing the overhead of DOSBOX or an x86 emulator. With a tweak to the terminal's color palette, Wordgrinder could probably be good enough, and I thoroughly appreciate that it does in-line text styling, but it's still a bit more limited than I'd like. I am wondering though, if there isn't a solution that would run native on Linux in an ncurses terminal like Wordgrinder but have some of the QoL improvements something like that mature DOS version of Word would have (mouse support, spellcheck, easy color scheme changes, more comprehensive shortcuts).

I would love something like a rich-text editor that is simply markdown behind the scenes, possibly with a spellcheck engine. I don't need full WYSIWYG, but I do want that basic visual of formatted text without having to mentally parse the markdown code, so I'm not looking for a two-phase solution with VIM and LaTeX, a two-pane markdown editor with live preview, or a note-taking app. If I have to install a DE, I guess Focuswriter or AbiWord could work, but I'd like to avoid that if possible, especially if I go with the Zero.

It feels more universally human. Like, it takes so much more skill to portray an atmosphere/vibe without one word at all. And its doesn't care which country you're from, you can share it with anyone in the world, regardless of language.

This is becoming more common in my town. I just either feel like an ass saying I dont have cash, or lying, but I also can't be giving out 20's to everyone who asks.

I feel bad for most of them but at the same time I get anxiety walking down the sidewalk and seeing someone up ahead that I know is going to ask me for money. Its not like you can say "oh no, I donate to services that help the needy" because that person isn't necessarily being helped by that. And ignoring completely feels so mean, plus I tried that one time and the person was screaming at me as i walked away that I ignored them.

I also dont want my city to round them up and send them to prison camps, something they are planning and that I know a lot of people would vote for just to "get rid of them" but im not supporting that at all.

Its tough.

Hey, so I have recently bought a raspberry pi 4 to use as a selfhosted Nextcloud and Immich server. I also thought about other stuff, I could host on there when I am not using the processing power and bandwidth and I came to the conclusion that I could seed legal torrents (I live in Germany, so I can afford no risks), that are ideally helping humanitarian projects (something like linux distros or open science data. Do you guys have some good ideas for where I could look for torrents that can effectively help people?

Note: I haven't yet. The following text is not an answer, and might not be worth reading. (Chance: approx. 95%)

Scary wall of text, in the spoiler you go.Issues

So far i only faced this threat twice (in high school), but managed to avoid it.

  • First, I was selected for Erasmus+ international exchange program. But I couldn't get the answer on how many people per room there would be nor whether there would be shared showers and toilets (like one large per building bathroom).
The school's psychologist then called me into her office to ask whether I would be capable of socializing with others, and to re-think it, as our group would have to do everything together in representative manner, so I just noped out.
  • Secondly, we went to some national competition, and were destined to stay at dormitory for 1 night. When I found that out, I said I rather won't go. When I answered why, I was told that they would arrange for me to have a single room, so that was fine. I just stayed inside there all the time, enjoying my solitude.

At home I live with parents. I don't have my own room, but subsidize for it with WC (separate from bathroom). Since there's no power outlets, I'll take 2 power banks, laptop, USB fan, phone, earphones, and stay there for most of the day.
Unfortunately, I may not find any such alone space over there.

Eating near others is also not quite easy. Usually I'd just wait for the lunchroom to empty, and then go there. Empty table near wall, with adjacent empty tables (excl. diagonally behind). Sometimes this would mean I wouldn't get to eat, or be late for class, but that wasn't a problem for me.
At home I just wait until my parents finish.
I can't stand seeing others, being seen, and hearing others' chewing if I am to eat.

Stuff to bring

I kinda like to be always ready. My biggest concern is electronics. What all do I bring? Should I take the mini PC with me, or leave it at home with WWAN modem, and use it over Tailscale?
Should I bring RTL-SDR with me, or leave it at home with the remote mini PC and only take RSP1 clone with me?
Which WiFi router to bring? Reliable one, or the one with Wireguard that restarts every 15 minutes and bootloops eventually?
Do I take both laptops for redundancy, or just the usual ThinkPad?
If bringing my CD player, do I use disposable batteries, or also take the AA charger with me?
Do I take my DAB+ radio?
Do I bring the spool of wire that's been useful for shortwave listening?
What about a printer? I'd only trust dot-matrix for moving around, but they're expensive AF.

Hell, when I went to that competition, I even took Cisco 871W (SoHo-style) and Cisco 1802 (1RU) routers, although that was mostly as a joke (I did play around with them though).
