Title almost says it all. OLED monitors are getting more and more affordable, but it's almost out of the picture when buying a monitor because of toolbars and HUD elements. I don't understand why monitors "burn-in", when I shine my LED flashlight or some LED xmas lights they won't simply start emitting the same light even when I turn them off. I know it's a dumb comparison, but still, what happens?

The other thing that I don't understand is the fact that I've never seen any signs of burn-in on anyone's phone. Alright, technically that's a lie, I did see some on a work phone (or two), that only had some chat app open, seemingly since ages, and the namebar was a bit burned-in, or something like that, as you'd guess I also didn't interact with that phone a lot. As as said above "but still," I've had my phone for a while now, so does my family and friends, some of us even doomscroll, and I've never seen any signs of burn-in on any (actually used) phone.

so, I can watch my background all day, but I should open my browser every like 3 hours press f11 twice and I'm safe? Ff I'm away just let the screensaver save my screen? In that case why would anyone ever worry about burn it, you almost have to do it intentionally. But if it's really dangerous, like I immerse myself into a youtube video, but it has the youtuber's pfp on the bottom right (does youtube still do that?), and it was hbomberguy's, am I just done, toasted, burnt-in?

i was walking along some bushes when a bird flew out from a bush in front of my path into a grass clearing. it was a very small crow. it made two quiet, short, high-pitched peeps in rapid succession, hopping in circles. i tried to walk around it, but it kept blocking my path and making the exact same peeps at me.

i got back on the stone path, and it hopped up right next to me, and starting ripping up grass and throwing it over my feet. i chuckled, and it stopped, looked up at me, and… peeped again, before continuing to bury my feet in grass.

i continued walking and it followed right next to me till the end of the path before watching me walk away and then returning to its bush.

i didn't recognise this bird, or seen a bird do this to me or anyone else before. i'm on especially friendly terms with the corvids in my neighbourhood, but they don't normally approach me.

any ideas? have you seen something similar?

As I was growing up, my family had a couple of sayings I took for granted were universal, at least within my language. As I became an adult I have learned that these are not universal at all:

• the ketchup effect. It is an expression meaning that when things arrive, they all arrive at the same time. Think of an old school glass ketchup bottle. When you hit the bottom of it, first there is nothing, then there is nothing and then the entire content is on your food.
• faster than Jesus slid down the mount of olives. Basically a saying that implies that the mount of olives is slippery due to olive oil and Jesus slipped.
• What you lack in memory, your legs suffer. An expression meaning that when you are forgetful, you usually need to run back and thus your legs suffer.

Please share your own weird family sayings.

Is there such a thing as there being degrees (Which are useful and can be applied to a decent selection of vacancies) and:

"degrees" (Which might sound fancy but aren't useful in a lot of vacancies, could also be just to say you got a degree)

This is not to insult anyone who has been to a university and finished their course, but it's something I've been told long time ago by my previous work colleague who nearly became a lawyer, supposedly there are meme degrees as he puts it that look good on a CV but used in an interview is tripe.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you say that is complete nonsense? Or is there some truth to this?

Mine... My Xbox 360 slim only costed 129 euro back in 2012 and to this day still work like brand new, you would think that the disc drive would stop working but no. Never had the need of open it or clean it's insides. Still great, I just don't use it anymore since I feel it's outdated and loading speeds are better nowadays.

With worrying global trends like climate change, pollution, increasingly divided or radical governments, economic woes, misinformation and disinformation everywhere, dangerous health crises and so on, what do you think - how much time do we have before "it all comes crashing down"? What will end life or our way of life as we know it first?

well first of all. i seem to have a lot of problems with coming up with sentences or forming sentences in general. for example when i'm talking to americans or whatever i usually don't really know what to say. but i fully understand them!! and when i'm about to say something. it's almost as if i didn't know any words.. like. i don't know any other english words other than the basic stuff. how can i improve?? please help me. thank you

When I swipe "don't" in Gboard, at least 30% of the time it decides I mean "didn't". I just tested it, and the accuracy was shockingly bad. I'd understand if the strokes were very similar, but "didn't" has a whole extra stroke in it compared to "don't". WTF, Google?

I've got two, one, is we love katamari, which I'm currently playing the rerelease of on steam. The Japanese culture, the wonderfully wacky story and gameplay, the weird but enrapturing soundtrack all coalesced into something new and amazing for me that to this day 20 years later I'm still glued to the screen for.

The other one is back when I was little enough, I would lie on my back under the Christmas tree looking out the window at the blizzard outside. I would lie like this for hours just watching the flurry of snow hitting the pane glass, that icy chaos mere inches away from the calm, twinkling tranquility of the string lights on the trees.

Both of these memories make me incredibly happy and frustratingly sad in a bittersweet way, but I don't think I'll ever forget them. How about you guys, what childhood memories stuck with you to this day? What felt so special about that moment?

Me, short answer no.

I have a few daughters looking for science and engineering programs in the next few years. They're all scared to attend schools in states hostile towards women. I get that. I'm looking for recommendations for schools in states positive towards women that have good STEM programs.

When i was young I thought my mom's colorful decor was ridiculous. Now I'm old and my kids think I'm ridiculous for wanting colorful everything. Is that a thing?

What with the recent development in the supreme courts I'm feeling a necessity to do what I can with the time left, politically.

However, aside from the most rudimentary basic terms I am basically completely ignorant to all politics on a state and federal level, and while I'd love to sit here and self loathe for my idiocy of not learning before it was important I need to start catching up and figuring out what I should be voting on and why.

Of course I'm deathly afraid that indiscriminately googling will lead to me learning biased and compromised knowledge from sites that I don't even know are biased, ending up with a skewed and inaccurate understanding.

While I know I could still be led astray by you guys, I figured it better to ask somewhere like here than to just wander off into the internet, so can anybody help me and people like me to start getting equipped?

I'm getting tired of my wallet and I'm hoping to get some new ideas. Current EDC is my phone, wallet, and keys on a lanyard. Whatchu got?

Edit: I ought to be a little more specific with my EDC, since most people are kindly taking the time to do so.

Phone: Pixel 8 Pro Wallet: bulky leather wallet, I don't even remember the brand, I've had it so long. Keys: a stylized lanyard with various house keys, car key fob, and a keychain that reads "I hope your day is as good as my butt" from my wife. I have to keep that, you understand.

Misc: Burt's Bees chapstick, Listerine breath strips, and occasionally a utility knife depending on my destination.

I've seen these all over Europe. Some have simple images of the cross flashing, some have windows screensaver esque animations, and some have 3d renders of various things rotating in all sorts of ways. Why is that? Wouldn't a simple green cross be enough to get the point across, or do they need to be overly verbose? Here's the full video instead of a gif

Looking to develop my Data skills in all respects, especially programming (I'm at the beginner stage) with an IT coach/tutor online. I know of MentorCruise and the few well-known tutoring services but wanted to also check here with the popular wisdom 🙂

I know learning on your own is the go-to recommendation but I'm specifically interested in learn with a mentor. Would appreciate any advice!
