I watch a lot of commentary channels on YouTube. My feed is filled with hot takes on the latest online trends and happenings, often dealing with topics like racism, sexism, abuse, and harassment. More and more, I've noticed YouTubers bleeping (or rather muting) words that might be flagged as being "advertiser unfriendly" and get their videos demonetized. Sometimes that's profanity, but more often it's words like abuse, Holocaust, kill, suicide, sexual, and abortion. Words that aren't inherently 'bad' but that brands wouldn't want to be associated with videos containing them. Similarly, TikTok creators change the spelling of words or use other terms in their speech and captions to avoid filters there.

At the same time, I heard someone comment on how they keep hearing people in real life say 'unalive' rather than 'suicide', with the former being a word often used to avoid filters. There's no doubt that online terminology creeps into our real lives. We use words and phrases that originate online in our speech vocabulary and they become a part of our culture.

Lately I've had this creeping concern that the filtering of words that advertisers don't like will have a larger societal implication on kids growing up right now. I fear that they'll view normal words like abuse as 'bad' and avoid using them because creators online can't use them, and that the fight for abortion rights will be hindered because the very word abortion can't be said in videos. Maybe I'm overthinking it or being too much of a downer but every time I watch a video that removes a normal, innocent word, it makes me wonder what that means for society.

Do you think that advertisers and platforms discouraging words and topics which can be controversial will have larger effects on society?

I've been going to Reddit over and over because Lemmy doesn't have the same machine learning, data science communities that Reddit has . Does anyone know of any communities?

I'm thinking about learning to play drums for some time now and I have a question. If I'm a complete beginner should I still get a full drum set? I know you can buy a cheap electric set for like $300 but can I start with something smaller and simpler? Are there some kind of electric pads that would work for taking first steps and that would later let me progress to full drum set? It's not that I don't have space, I'm just not sure I will stick with it and I don't want to be stack a big set I don't use later. Or full set is actually the best way to start?

In the context of VPNs for example. Some VPNs store and provide information about what sites you go to third parties. Third parties analyze it and figure out what adds to show you. Hmm... then let them show me those adds they want to show me. I do hate adds as a whole and use an add blocker, thus. But I couldn't care less what particular type of adds they show me, they are still adds.

Someone knows what sites I go, what then. If someone curiously inquired me on this type of information I'd tell them without giving a second thought. Incomparably larger amount of data I put out just by making comments and posts.

Previously, what works is anti vibration layers under bed. Prosourcefit exercise puzzle mats, quietwalk flooring underlayment, felt rug pad with rubber backing, thick cut high pile rug, anti vibration pads.

I'm just a straight male. Are my pronouns he/him? Is that how I should tell people? Do you actually tell them as you meet them ? Do I have to wait for a certain social cue ?

How about online. Should I tell people or have it on my personal profile somewhere?

And about respecting other people's pronouns. How do i figure them out ? Is it a big faux pas if I don't before I know them ? Is it a faux pas if I refer to someone I just met and I assumed to be male as he/him?

I've never seen anyone referring to anyone irl by non conventional pronouns. Is it an actual thing or is it currently being pushed to make the world a more inclusive place?

Assume you're life-lusted and are willing to abandon every moral you have just to live. Paying for cancer treatment is also worth prison time to you.

Also assume you've exhausted all ethical fundraising options, i.e. GoFundMe, loans, etc. and that insurance won't cover treatment for whatever reason.

If top of the society is immoral psychopaths with power, and most of the society is composed of people with good intentions, then there is not much hope for "beta uprising" until things go way beyond point of recovery, because powerful psychopaths will not let their power get taken away.

Not sure if this is just evolutionary biology, but this cycle of psychopaths at the top has been going on since when, at least ancient Egypt. And in all these thousands of years, the system that enables this cycle got way more reinforced than it got dismantled.

So is it maybe better idea to put benevolent people's energy towards designing and preparing a new societal system that will have built-in mechanisms for preventing corruption and malevolence? "prepare" as in get ready to implement for when the current messed up system is about to grind to a halt and collapse? Well, it would be best to figure out how to go full Benevolent Theseus™ by replacing parts of currently failing system with the corruption-proof ones.

This question is for all who set goals for them at the beginning of the year. What is it that you are yet to achieve?

Couldn't we have a lead box lined with these radiation to electricity converters with a small amount of radioactive material in the center, and have an energy generating device that would last for thousands or even millions of years? Imagine putting the sun in a box lined with solar cells, but on a much smaller scale.

Is there a reason this wouldn't work?

There are a number of rating sites out there, sometimes with conflicting information. What do you go to when you want to donate, especially when you want to look for a particular issue/crisis/disaster.

If I can improve my impact by taking a few minutes to research, it would be nice to have a place to go instead of googling "charity rating for ____"
