I'll start:

• Some significant portion of funds go towards development of the Lemmy software. 80%? Rest goes to lemmy instance hosting.
• Ads are reasonable and non-intrusive (no popups etc)
• People can still browse w/ an adblocker

I personally would gladly turn off my adblocker if I knew the ads were supporting development. Hell, I might even click a few!

I'll make it clear that we're talking about ad trackers.

When adding such trackers to the application, do you have any thoughts that this is wrong?

Many websites have a - huge- part in their cookie wall, called 'legitimate interest'. I never allow them and i wonder; is this just a loophole to be able to force certain cookies on us anyway?

I can't imagine it is harmless, but i never hear anyone discussing these type of cookies.

I agree that we need to do as much as possible to block all these invaders of our privacy, though it is ridiculous that we have to make so much effort to protect ourselves. And i know many people around me, who just let it all happen and are sometimes not even aware of such things as trackers. And honestly, they shouldn't have to be aware, it is infuriating that these things are either allowed, or those companies taking the - small - risk to get away with it, because most people won't bother with law suits and what not, certainly not when so many websites have these shady practices...

Just curious.

I used eSim for a while when I first got a phone that supported eSim, because I wanted to make it harder for a thief to disable the phone tracking, but now my main phone is broken and I'm a bit annoyed at having to chat with customer support for half and hour to activate eSim on another device.

It's one of those things I've never talked about with other people, the most I've really been exposed to journal keeping in pop culture is Doug Funny. People don't talk about their personal journals.

Ever since I was a teenager I've sometimes felt compelled to write about major events, and over the years this has become the habit of keeping a journal that I write in almost every day, and sometimes I go back and read old entries. "What was I doing this time last year?" I also sometimes keep notes or such intentionally for future reference.

So, if you keep a journal, do you go back and read it? Why?

My phone is normally worse for color gradients and contrasts than my eyes. Also, normally it has worse nightvision.

But when decreasing the shutter speed, for example in OpenCamera, I get crazy night pics.

I see that when its dark my FPS goes down, I see less frames automatically and totally cant control that.

Could this mechanism be altered, to have even less FPS but more photons in the soup to get brighter sight?

Yes, trying to hack my eyes here. "Getting used to darkness" is normally the pupils getting wider, there are quite some interesting plants to do that but I havent heard of anything altering the brains image processing.

I learned:

• in Nightsight we use the rod cells, which take longer to send a signal. That way they capture more photons, but the "FPS" is lower
• you can trick your iris naturally to stay open, like the Pirates did (some plants like nightshades also do this, applied locally)

This might sound really stupid (be gentle) but I wonder if some of the risks of directly and forcefully inhaling cannabis vapour can be attenuated by kind of sucking into one's cheek rather than directly unmediated the normal way and then indirectly sort of vaguely breathing it indirectly.

Tomorrow is a big event at my university. I'd like to make a fun thing where the people of the Board Game society I am in can try to find me for a riddle, kind of a Where is Waldo in a place where there is a crap tone of people to find the NPC that'll give them a Riddle (Maybe something to win? No idea how I could do that detail)

Social status (in my own words) is the idea that a person has a relative social worth in a certain context. For example in a class room a teacher has a high social status and therefore must be listened to. On the other hand, if that same teacher was stopped by the police for speeding, they would not have a relatively low status compared to the police officer and should therefore listen to the police officer.

Basically you are expected to treat some people with more deference than others based upon status signifiers like what role they have and what clothing they are wearing or how they speak or act towards to you.

I guess you could say it is a widely held belief that some people are better or more important than others.

How would you approach explaining that idea to a child? When is age would be too soon? When would it make sense to explain that it is a person's social status is not always justified (i.e cops, bosses, parents)? Traditionally, I guess they would learn it by trial and error but I don't necessarily think they would learn the idea that it is often abused to control others in a school setting since authority figures generally don't want others questioning them.

I know this is a joke/meme, but I sincerely think of the Roman Empire a surprising amount of times. I find myself obsessing over how Roman citizens were living just as complex lives as we are today, or about Marcus Aurelius' life and philosophy, or about how the Republic fell and became a totalitarian state.
