Where I live, there's a law that says all vehicles have to yield for pedestrians at crosswalks. Of course this would be a thing, otherwise crosswalks would only be as good as any part of the road. Despite this, it's a largely unfollowed rule, to severe degrees. To the extent that me and some friends have a "running gag" (generous way to put it) where some of us bet on who can wait at a crosswalk point and cross the street the quickest without going ahead before cars decided to stop. Tonight I had to wait twenty minutes for a black jeep to stop, the longest I've had to wait for years (and side note, I noticed that drivers of certain vehicle types/colors are more likely to stop for you), so I lost that bet tonight if we were doing it.

Some of us have also apparently led drivers to having bad vibes because some of us have used our phones to take extensive video of what's going on, causing angry drivers (never referring to the ones that do stop for us) to yell that we're invading privacy. And the response is always something along the line of "what are you going to do, would you really risk exposing yourself just to make a complaint that someone is making a video" before posting them to groups like the main Tumblr road conflict group (such stuff being hidden from there at the moment).

So what's the longest you've ever had to wait to cross the street? And do you notice any etiquette trends like I describe in that one part?

So these are the thoughts I had:

1. Matches based on simple user selection: age range, lifestyle, hobbies etc. None of that dumb algorithm stuff that makes you reset your profile every month.

2. ActivityPub protocol so that anyone can run their own instance, but can also be blocked if anything heinous happens.

3. E2EE for messaging (and anything else if it's possible).

4. Someone wrote an open-source anti-CSAM script for Lemmy recently, I hope we could adapt that to our use.

5. Just, like, everyone have a good time on this app, we're here for love lol

I am not a coder, so I would have no idea how to do this, but I wonder about the interest in such a creation. Maybe some of you out there could make something I could use to get a date (pls).

I have been using a Pebble Time Steel for years even after their acquisition by ~~Garmin~~ Someone corrected me it was FitBit not Garmin thanks to Rebble, a modded firmware that gives it new life, but I would like a smartwatch that can track my heart rate.

I don't mind using an older device especially if it means a cheaper price. A bonus for me would be if it still had some kind of community around it or a custom firmware like Pebble watches do.

I found an original Moto 360 with a functional battery for about $30 but I am not sure if due its age its functionality would be greatly limited.

Edit: It seems like Garmin and FitBit might be worth looking at. But I wouldn't know what devices to look at or if there have been any major improvements with recent revisions.

Edit: Just an update I bought a Garmin VivoActive 3 used and locally. It seems to have some solid build quality but appears to have significantly less apps and features compared to my Pebble. The heart rate sensor seems to work alright though. I am a dork for metrics so I feel like that should make up for it.

For the record I don't believe in the supernatural but I love hearing others people's stories and believe that most people aren't lying.

I've personally had a few experiences that I cannot explain and that, in the moment, were quite scary.

What's your paranormal experience?

I've looked into moving somewhere affordable, but it seems to be an area prone to wildfires and was evacuated for such recently.

What happens during an evacuation? Where do you go? Who covers the cost it's a hotel or something, or do people find their own accommodations? What kind of damage can you expect from smoke when you return home if it is still standing? Anything else unexpected that comes from this?

I just had two people take my order in a drive thru. They alternated every question. First person welcomed me and asked what I wanted. The next person asked what size and drink I wanted. The first person came back on and asked if I wanted any cheese sauce then the second person came back on and told me the price. When I got up to the window the 2nd person was the one working the register. This happens from time to time at different places when I get lunch but I can't figure out why it is done.

Apparently, it's a squad of Russian Soldiers refusing to go back to the front line. The fat guy says they were NOT getting food or water (yeah I heard it), I am pretty sure he is right. So, what are the types of conditions you have to face to get water and food at soldiers? I mean, I can understand them not getting ammo and man power to get rid of the dead. Probably manufacturing problems and it's dangerous respectively. But yeah, what else? Why would they not get food and water?

Regardless of the negative aspects, Meta joining the Fediverse will definitely make the numbers of active users explode. This will probably bring the network and its concepts to many people and also a matter of public debate.

What's your opinion on the repost bot in the AITA community? From my perspective, it provides little to no value to cross post such content from another website.

First of all, AITA lives off the comments and if there aren't any, it's not really entertaining to read the posts.

Second, if someone hypothetically replied here, it would never reach the OP on reddit, so it's not meaningful to make the effort.

And last but not least, if there are sometimes dozens of reposts per hour here, it drowns any interesting original content on Lemmy.

So overall I guess it brings more harm than good.

PS: Originally I planned to post this in the AITA community directly but ironically it's locked down to "mods only". So there's not even a chance to have there any original content.

Personally, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I knew it was going to be quite the experience before I went for the first time‡ but it was so much fun I had to keep going back bringing friends each time.

It's still a fun tradition to do though we haven't done it since last year, we're probably going to try and go again in a few weeks.

‡ I had seen it many times before going to see it in theaters for the first time.

I just managed to get a absolute baseline working app in avaloniaUI using this library that someone cooked up. No idea if the library is actively maintained, but uh, we'll figure that out when we get to it.

Compared to using the site, possible advantages of a desktop are:

1. Being able to save posts offline
2. Client side filtering
3. performance
4. less data usage
5. Not having to use your browser

Other things too, I'm sure. Just trying to gauge interest here. Also I barely know avalonia or C# so just don't expect a polished app out by next monday.

On the journey to becoming a productive member of society I had to compartmentalize my inner child.

During my early schoolboy years, he waited patiently for the school day to finish so that he could finally resume his creative and playful pursuits.

As the education became more involved, he had to wait a little longer because of homework.

In university, the complicated assignments, group projects, and late night study sessions meant that he would often not get to let loose until the weekend.

The full-time job, commute, technical projects, work politics, and other adult responsibilities really did the biggest number on him though. Sometimes he would go without playing for weeks, or months at a time.

Today it's as if my adult mask has adhered permanently to my face and I can no longer access him at all.

Does anyone else think having emojis as a response to a comment/thread would be a neat addition instead of only upvote/downvote?

Reddit seemed to sorta do that with awards but thats not quite what I'm suggesting.

Something similar to GitHub for instance, except we keep the upvote downvote system as-is.

This would hopefully discourage the use of upvote/downvote as a "I like/dislike this" button while also adding the ability to more accurately express the emotion the post/comment illicited

Additionally, there are a lot of people who are mostly just lurkers and have no desire to post, but they want to be able to emote further then just a upvote/downvote but DON'T want to actually post a comment like "I love this" or "You're so right" or even just commenting an emoji, because making a comment is a whole extra action that makes them visible, opens up to comments or upvotes/downvotes.

I realize and understand the criticisms of ChatGPT and I have personally seem how bad it can be. Once I asked to count the number of days till a random date giving the present date and it failed miserably, again and again. Trust me! I get the criticism. But, what about Bing Chat Bot?

Have you ever tried to ask you Physics and Maths related questions to it? I was coding a while ago and I had a pretty complex questions which could not be solved by a very popular reddit coding community but Bing Chatbot gave an answer to it in an instant! I was genuinely impressed. Apparently it checks for answers on multiple webpages on the internet, it reads and understands what it reads and it gives the answer to it after combining the knowledge it gained from it's search. Again, the question I asked was pretty complex but it was able to answer it in an instant and it was the right answer! It was coding, it's pretty hard to get the right answer in the first try, I have found it's more "trial and error".

So yeah!

1. Can I rely partially on Bing Chatbot for math questions?
2. If not can I ask it to form a query which encapsulates my question perfectly?
3. If not, should I ask it to "Answer this question and site your sources"?
4. Can I do something more? i.e., like I did in 3? What are your thoughts on this?
