The Lemmy web frontend is terrible (on desktop, at least). I have to click on every single image for it to load and it's just generally ugly. Any good alternative frontends would be greatly appreciated. I checked some of them and they are either not loading or as bad as the original one.

Hi again, I went thrifting and found a working, original switch dock for 3$ including the charging cable and assuming I could just plug in my other devices via the usb c input, I brought it. Turns out it doesnt work with other usb c devices for reasons and I dont own a switch personally so I'm kinda stuck with this cool paper weight. Do you guys have any ideas? Alternatively, I could take it apart for spare parts and keep the housing for a project or just donate it again. I usually do research before buying electronics but for the price I took a gamble.

Edit: I'll just donate it appreciate all the feedback thank you

I like The Man Behind The Slaughter by The Living Tombstone. I don't tend to enjoy fan-made music, but this one was too groovy to pass up.

For me, its Xena.

Few years back, height of covid epidemic, was living in homeless shelters. Overcrowded slums, everyone miserable, yelling, screaming, fights, abuse, rage. At one point, could feel the anger building in me. Powerless, a victim, desire for retribution. What good was trying to be better person, when all it meant was people walking over me.

Started rewatching xena, hadn't in years. Big message of the show: when surrounded by hate, violence, it's tempting to give in, to not be a victim. But you have a choice, to not continue the cycle, to make a better world. I so needed to hear that message at that time in my life.

What tv show helped you?

There are many closed source applications that have been removed from the Google Play catalog for various reasons.

Often this reason is the cessation of further development and maintenance of the application.

Why don't these people make the code open to everyone if they don't need it anymore?

This could bring great benefits to all people, but everything that was once created simply disappears.

Hiya, pretty much the title. I have a dozen tapes I want to backup before age takes its toll. My basic idea after watching some videos online is to buy a hardware based upscaler that can interface with my vcr then throw that signal to a video capture card and record on my computer. I'll go with name brands to avoid problems but is that really the best method? I want to avoid sending them to a service since it will cost more than just buying the hardware in the first place and I got time to kill.

Hey do anybody know where you get a tv that supports 4k and does not have that locked up smarttv shit?

If there are none, does anybody know a tv that boots fast(less than 30 seconds) and displays an hdmi input by default without the need to choose the input from a menu.

Thanks in advance.

And sorry if I am in the wrong place.

My sister is 23 and still dresses up and goes out knocking doors for candy... and I find it weird but I let her do her. It got me thinking, at what age do you think someone should stop Trick r Treating at? Just curious.

Hi,

Yesterday I stumbled on this very interesting story, which describes the horrible mess patients have to deal with in order to get into clinical trials: https://bessstillman.substack.com/p/please-be-dying-but-not-too-quickly.

I wanted to share it on Lemmy, but I couldn't think of the right community. Any insight? I feel this is relevant to a fairly broad audience.

Apologies if this doesn't fit here, not sure where else to post something like this on lemmy

I think having gravity act like weather might be an interesting concept for a fantasy world, where each country has its own gravity patterns, some tend to be heavier some tend to be lighter, some are all over the place

For a few examples, there could be a desert with gravity so high you can get dragged down into the sand

Could be a country with gravity so low everyone uses personal aircraft that work like bicycles instead of land vehicles

Animals in higher gravity areas would have less dense bones, more muscle, etc and lower gravity would have far larger animals because they can support more weight

In a really high gravity area people might need exoskeletons to prevent long term damage

Some news that would be completely mundane today but scary or shocking in the past.

Just watched the Boy Boy video on George Bush’s Masterclass, and they made me think about which U.S. President was actually worse.

I'm writing this as someone who has mostly lived in the US and Canada. Personally, I find the whole "lying to children about Christmas" thing just a bit weird (no judgment on those who enjoy this aspect of the holiday). But because it's completely normalized in our culture, this is something many people have to deal with.

Two questions:

What age does this normally happen? I suppose you want the "magic of Christmas" at younger ages, but it gets embarrassing at a certain point.

And how does it normally happen? Let them find out from others through people at school? Tell them explicitly during a "talk"? Let them figure it out on their own?

Hello! I'm looking for help in finding ways to stay up to date with News "of the World" in the modern age. Having de-Googled (and, therefore, abandoned Google News), I find it hard to track what is going on outside of links posted to Lemmy/Mastodon (my only social media), and have no subscriptions to any streaming channels and no cable TV. I'm hoping someone can help me find a way to subscribe/watch enough news that I can stay properly informed. (For context, I am living in the US but believe I should be aware of activities in the rest of the World as we all undoubtedly impact each other.)

My goals are:

  1. "Watch" topics in particular (ex: Tech, Science, Politics, LGBTQ+ rights, etc.).
  2. Discover new items of interest based on my current interests.
  3. Reputable sources that at least attempt to be unbiased (especially those that cite respectably, such as academic publications and the like).
  4. Prefer FOSS solutions.
  5. Multiple (even dissenting) opinions are enjoyable.

I am a learned man and value knowledge, open-mindedness, objective truth, and perspective. Any suggestions are eagerly encouraged. Thank you all.
