Something I've always noticed and am going through now. Sometimes I'll drink too much the night before and be concerned about a hangover the next morning. Morning comes, and almost always my first thought is "gee I feel like shit but actually this is way less bad then I was expecting" this misplaced optimism gets washed away at an indeterminate length of time later when a wave of awful nausea crescendos to a peak of crappiness before gradually receding leading me to think "maybe that was the worst of it" only for the cycle to repeat.

This happens even when the hangover is not one severe enough to have caused vomiting. Feeling sick from drinking too much I understand, but I wonder what's physically happening during the peak of these waves that's not happening during the troughs.

I know it's gross, unhealthy, a stupid habit, makes no sense.

Trouble quitting cuz it's something to do with hands, fidgety, restless, oral fixation I think, and it gets me out of the house. Can't find a habit to replace it with.

like what are the best methods to get the brain active to create something, most of the things i want to require an idea but the truth is i have nothing and im not sure how to get an idea or if its even possible for me due to my autism or how my brain works.

maybe im just being hard on myself i use to come up with so many ideas but theses days i have nothing or just half a mess that i cant seem to finish cleaning, if that makes sense.

is there a suggestion, tip, method, or something that can get my brain started. if your wondering what im trying to do i would like to make a short comic i feel if doing so i might learn something or it would be interesting. i heard sticky notes are good but i dont want a room full of sticky notes, that just dosent seem right?

Originally posted in the linux community but wanted to expand my results a bit. Hopefully this isnt considered tech support since the problem is already solved and I just want information. (Copy & pasted) Still new to linux hope its ok to ask here. I decided to replace one of my backup drives for the first time in 5ish years with a new 2.5" HDD meant for internal use but in an enclosure (the enclosure works fine). I formatted it in ntfs via gparted and everything went as expected, I even created a large veracrypt container file. I safely removed the drive and after a few hours I re-connected it and it made the notification noise that indicates the drive was detected but it's filesystem wasn't mounted. It showed up in gparted, disks and lsblk (as sdb1). Searched online and learned to manually mount it in the /mnt/ directory but I didnt want to manually do that everytime. I ended up reformatting it and for good measure, connected to another port and boom it mounted once connected. Decided not to create the file container or even incorporate the drive into my backup strategy yet until I get input whether or not this is a hardware issue or software. So what do you guys think happened? Not sure what info to provide.

Edit: the filesystem and encryption software I chose is for compatibility between my devices and both machines have the proper software to support that filesystem

Edit 2: new errors relating to my hardware started showing up when further proceeding with my plan so I'm just going to return it and try again

It happened to my car last week, it got towed to a mechanic and I'm yet to hear back. I don't know a lot about cars, so I'm hoping I'll learn something here and be able to tell if the mechanic tries to rip me off.

The car is a small hatchback automatic Hyundai Getz, 2009, serviced regularly. I've had it for 6 years with no major issues until about a year or so.

Five days ago I was driving through the city for at least 40 minutes when suddenly, while waiting at the lights, the car shook and for a moment I thought it would stall. I stopped on a side street, waited 20 minutes and resumed my journey.

About an hour later I'm on the motorway and it shakes again. I stop on the shoulder, wait, but it's not a safe area. I start again, only now I have the check engine light on my dashboard blinking. I manage to take an exit and my car stops on its own, the oil and battery lights now visible too. Fortunately there is no traffic here so I wait a minute, start again and park it on the shoulder.

Roadside assistance arrives, the mechanic looks at it and finds nothing wrong with it other than a fuel sensor which is an issue I've had for several years now. We get it towed to a mechanic but they were closing shop by the time I arrived. Before closing the shop mechanic says that at a glance he doesn't see anything, but notes the oil looks very clean.

I've never had the car shake like this. The last time it failed me was early this year, when it overheated during a very hot day, but it didn't shake. I've had the thermostat repaired since as well as a minor coolant leak.

Congrats, you've read this far. Thoughts?

I have been spoiled for customisation by hyprland recently and have been looking at customizing my phone UI

All the custom launchers I've tried so far are rather lacking in customisability, features and are usually paywalled for "advanced" features like having more than one widget

At the moment I think I'm going to end up back on the default one

I’m in the US so I’ve mostly watched US TV shows, I’ve been wanting to watch shows made by other countries as there must be some great ones that never took off in the states.

I’ve seen a few I could recommend like Alice in Borderlands (Japanese), Gangs in London (UK), Lupin (French)

For the past few weeks I've been working on creating my own public radio station (it's been a dream of mine since I was a kid). Well now it's up and running but I don't know what to do with it. So I thought I'd see what Lemmy thinks about the concept, before I go all in and start investing in licensing fees, better servers, and more listener capacity.

If you're interested, we'll need curators to add songs to the rotation when no DJ is on air. It's simple and straightforward. Just click "Suggest" on the top right of the website and enter the Artist + Song Title on the form.

We will also need DJs and presenters to volunteer any freetime you're willing to give up and help make this happen. Click "Join" to get started.

All styles and genres are welcome. Hop on the airwaves anytime you want. Take requests, or don't. Mix and scratch, or just play one tune after another. Host a talk show/podcast if it suits you. Up to you. You can either use your own DJ/broadcasting software, otherwise there is a Web DJ interface for those with no software/experience.

Click Join to sign up to be DJ/presenter, or Suggest to submit your own song suggestions for regular rotation (no signup required to suggest a tune).

EDIT: Thanks for all the song submissions so far! I've added them to the rotation. Feel free to suggest any tunes for removal as well.

EDIT 2: Looks like I'm going to have to upgrade web servers sooner than expected. If you're having issues connecting, try the temporary URL

EDIT 3: Gonna take awhile to go through the applications. I'll take care of as many as I can tonight. Check your inbox (and don't forget the @ in your username when applying. I can't reply if I don't know what instance you're using.)

EDIT 4: All DJ applications have been processed so far. Check your inboxes! Gonna spend the next few hours uploading more of your song suggestions. This takes awhile because I have to manually check every tune to make sure it's suitable for airplay! Upon approval, your tune(s) will play at regular intervals. It may take a few hours for it to play for the first time. BTW, remember to use the "Submit" button. "Request" is for one time requests when a DJ is live. I'm brainstorming ideas on streamlining this so that the tune always goes to the right place.

EDIT 5: Well this blew up bigger than I could have hoped for. Gonna call it a night, but I'll be back tomorrow to upload more of your suggestions!

Also I'm going to dust off the turntables and do a live show tomorrow @ 7-9pm EST (00:00-02:00 GMT, check the schedule on the website). Requests accepted. Catch you on the airwaves then!

I feel like it would be an interesting learning tool cuz I learn a ton on here and it gets me writing without anyone having to hold a gun to my head. I mean like even essay-length or at least essay-worthy treatments of things I respond to in longer-form, and even for the shorter-form stuff

Hello you awesome people,

Friends are having a boy and everyone they know wants to push a name on the child. So I decided to be the best friend they could have and to offer only bad, ugly or horrendous names to the lucky parents so they could have a laugh. I already send them some names and dictators, Smeagol, Steve and Juan-Esteban.

So please, people or Lemmy, give me the worst names you could give a child, so that I can help them as a good friend!

Ps: don't worry, I've already planned some meals to drop off when the gremlin will be there to feed the parents. And some take-out vouchers so they won't get food poisoning

For me it was "buy high quality pillow" because you sleep for one thrid of a day etc. I needed a new pillow anyway so I came to the store and bought the best they had. And it was ... ok. Like it's a fine pillow but my sleeping haven't improved really, it's basically the same. So I was disapointed :(

So, which life pro tip disappointed you?

How do you folks prefer to consume how-to’s and walkthroughs?

I’m starting to document how-to guides for people passionate about IT (who maybe are a little bit too into it) that like to run enterprise-grade systems at home.

Basically, I’m publicising my documentation for setting up systems and the weird problems I hit that may have taken me days or weeks to solve. Often this information isn’t able to be searched online or has little to no vendor documentation on how to solve it. Basically, I’m hoping my suffering means someone else might not have to if I share this stuff.

At this stage I’m putting everything into a blog, but I know how annoying it is to see posts on platforms like Lemmy that are a hyperlink and a bare post. So how would you prefer to see it?

I’ve considered a few options, each with negatives and positives but largely it distils to:

  1. Don’t overthink it, just post the link and if people don’t want to click it they won’t
  2. Duplicate the content of the blog post to the lemmy post (means double-handling the edits when the post has to be updated but preserves the info in the event the blog dies)
  3. Post the link and put a high level breakdown of the guide in the lemmy post, just enough that people get the main idea and they can follow the link for more details if they choose (more work as it means writing the post essentially twice, just more condensed)

What do you folks think?
