François-Philippe Champagne told Canadians in May 2024 that the country would “never” serve as a backdoor for Chinese EVs into North America.

He repeated the pledge in August, October, December, and again in March 2025.

Eighteen months later, as Canada’s Finance Minister, Champagne returned from a four-day trade mission to Beijing where he promoted deeper economic ties with the country whose vehicles he had vowed to keep out.

Canada’s 100% surtax on Chinese-made EVs — which Champagne helped design and publicly championed — was replaced in January with a quota allowing 49,000 vehicles per year at a 6.1% tariff.

...

Champagne’s public opposition to Chinese EV imports began on May 17, 2024 ... “Canada has never been and will never be a backdoor for China in the North American market ... it’s fair to say that everything is on the table to protect our industry and our workers.”

At the time, Ottawa had committed tens of billions of dollars in subsidies to attract EV manufacturing from Honda Motor Co., Stellantis, and Volkswagen Group.

Champagne framed cheap Chinese imports as an existential threat to those investments.

On August 26, ... Champagne ... cited 550,000 direct and indirect jobs in Canada’s auto supply chain. “This is about securing the fair, prosperous future Canadians deserve,” he said.

In the government’s October 1 implementation notice, he said Ottawa was “taking further action to protect Canadian workers from China’s unfair, non-market practices” and pledged to foster domestic EV supply chains “from mining critical minerals to manufacturing batteries and vehicles right here at home.”

On October 18, he posted on X: “Tariffs on EVs, steel, and aluminum from China ensure a fair and competitive environment for everyone. But, we also know our businesses need time to adjust their supply chains away from Chinese products.”

The language signalled structural decoupling.

By December 2024, he was still on message, warning on X that “if you say no to Canada you are basically saying yes to China” on strategic supply chains.

As late as March 12, 2025 — ten months before the deal that reversed the tariff — Champagne was asked by CTV News whether Canada would soften its position.

“We’re not. Not with respect to the tariffs that we put because there was a good reason,” he said. “We will say we would never be a back door to cheap Chinese vehicles which are overly subsidized and where they don’t respect labour law and environmental laws.”

He added: “We want to protect our industry. We want to protect our workers. We want to protect our communities. And the reason why we impose the tariff still remains very valid today.”

...

Champagne visited the Chinese capital from Tuesday to Saturday last week ... When asked directly whether he had raised the issue of forced labour or human rights with his Chinese counterparts, [Champagne said], “We did speak about supply chain integrity. That was a core message. Canada puts a lot of importance on supply chain integrity and that our bilateral trade needs to be conducted in accordance with international standards.”

He did not use the words “forced labour” or “human rights” in his answer.

...

The vocabulary had changed. “Supply chain integrity” replaced “forced labour.” “International standards” replaced “Chinese labour abuses” while engagement “with eyes wide open” replaced “never a backdoor.”

...

The forced labour issue that Champagne navigated carefully in Beijing has intensified since his return.

On Wednesday, Canada’s auto manufacturing lobby seized on fresh allegations against BYD to renew its opposition to the Chinese automaker’s market entry.

Days after Brazilian authorities added BYD to a government blacklist over what labour inspectors described as “slavery-like” conditions at a factory in Camaçari, Bahia, an upcoming report by New York-based China Labor Watch found similar conditions at BYD‘s Hungarian plant in Szeged.

CVMA President Brian Kingston called the findings “deeply concerning.”

Speaking with CBC, he said: “Canada’s auto industry can compete and win, but the playing field must be level.”

It is the same argument Champagne made in 2024 to justify the tariff he now administers the reversal of.

The Republic of Moldova has declared its readiness to help European countries holding elections counter disinformation and destabilization campaigns attributed to the Kremlin.

Archived version

Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Cristina Gherasimov, stated that the country’s accession to the European Union is not only a security guarantee for Chisinau, but also an advantage for the entire European bloc.

“Moldova’s accession is often described as a security guarantee for our country. And it truly is. But it is equally a strategic investment in Europe’s own security,” she said.

In turn, national security adviser Stanislav Secrieru emphasized that Moldova brings direct experience in countering hybrid threats.

“We come with something unique. We have hard-earned knowledge and solutions tested directly on the ground to deal with Russian hybrid threats,” he stated.

...

According to authorities, Moldova has also dismantled a cross-border network that allegedly trained young people in camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia for destabilization actions in European countries. Participants reportedly trained to operate drones, use incendiary devices, and evade law enforcement during protests.

Officials say Moldova has already shared its experience with EU member states preparing for elections, including Hungary, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland. French authorities have already warned about potential Russian interference.

President Maia Sandu continues to promote Moldova’s EU accession, stressing that integration is essential for regional security.

...

During a recent visit to Ireland, Sandu emphasized that ‘Russia is a threat to everyone’.

“Russia has also learned that it’s easier to impose its will through hybrid wars than through boots on the ground,” she said.

Sandu ... said this has been seen in Moldova in terms of Russian efforts to interfere in elections which she said have been “brutal”.

...

A small, landlocked country, Moldova sits between Romania and Ukraine. Sandu outlined how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine saw more than a million refugees cross into Moldova and that “for a population of 2.4 million this was quite a challenge”. Some 130,000 Ukrainians are still living there.

The war sparked an energy crisis for Moldova – which has since eliminated its dependency on Russian gas – and the economy has been “significantly affected”.

Sandu said Moldova’s airspace had been “violated constantly” and Russian Shahed drones had landed in people’s yards and on their roofs. A recent attack on a hydropower plant in Ukraine left 300,000 people in her country without safe drinking water.

Shatner said he was buying "the rights to Gritz's life story". But by paying before the "POW rescue" raid happened, while Gritz was actively & openly fund-raising for the raid, was he basically helping to fund the raid?

Perhaps less surprisingly, Clint Eastwood also chipped in $30,000.

And even less surprisingly, the raid was a complete failure and Gritz was never able to provide any evidence whatsoever of US POWs in South East Asia after the end of the US-Vietnam War.

Gritz was supposedly an inspiration for fictional characters including John Rambo and Hannibal Smith of The A-Team... and later became involved in various far-right activities (including becoming the "unwitting" presidential running mate of KKK leader David Duke), more conspiracy fantasies & setting up his own religious/military commune.

The arrest took place just moments after she had provided evidence intended to hold her alleged attacker accountable.

According to the advocate who accompanied her, the federal agents were not wearing uniforms. They forced the 'screaming' woman into an unmarked vehicle before driving away. When the advocate attempted to seek help, police officers reportedly told her: 'We can't do a thing. They're ICE.'

All signs point to yes.

What was the point of Israel’s surprise mass strikes on Lebanon that killed more than 200 people and drew widespread international condemnation?

Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials have claimed the largest strike against Hezbollah during the month-long war against Iran was carefully aimed at members of the armed group, but the attacks appeared to be as much a piece of violent spectacle to benefit Netanyahu as militarily useful.

Others have speculated that the attack – without warning and initially hitting more than 100 targets in 10 minutes including in densely populated residential areas in central Beirut – was aimed at undermining the US-Iran ceasefire that many see as being imposed on an unhappy Netanyahu.

The version being briefed in the Israeli media is that Hezbollah had sought to move command posts to civilian areas outside its historical centres, such as the sprawling Dahieh suburb, to better conceal and protect them – a claim Israel has previously made about Hamas in Gaza.

So, we have a war being led by two leaders trying to avoid legal proceedings at home for past (alleged) infractions. What's a bit of war crimes between friends?
