I want to read your words, your mistakes, your opinions, what's on your mind. Not whatever gets summarised or filtered through a machine, please.

I don’t even want to use those two letters, or the more appropiate three-letter acronym, because honestly, it annoys me to even type it out at this point. What a pain.

I’ll share some things that shouldn’t need to be said, but in just in case, here’s what a personal website does not need...

sorry if this is offensive. im autistic too and just curious. i have come across several people who are autistic making fun of or being rude to other neurodivergent folks, especially those who are autistic but need more support.

a good example of this was my ex-girlfriend “lynn". she hated my adhd + i think autistic friend (he told me he was autistic but then said he didn’t know). she would always talk behind his back on how annoying he was and would snap at him, going “mhm, yeah sure.” whenever he would talk and just being sarcastic.

lynn also, despite being autistic, said i was too weird to connect with and form a bond with and said we couldn’t be friends because we didn’t form an instant bond.

furthermore, my other ex-gf kayla questioned autism/neurodivergence. kayla also told me my autism made her uncomfortable, called me weird for having mental breakdowns and stimming, talking behind my back, and later completely ignoring my messages so we don’t even talk anymore when i tried to be her friend and forgive her.

so yeah, why don’t some neurodivergent people understand what it's like? wouldn’t it make sense for them to?

Salamander was rescued from a barbed wire fence where he sustained some pretty serious damage to his wing membrane.

Salamander needs to wear a dressing on this wing to help it heal in a way that is doesn't contract. Salamanders carer applied a dressing to his wing, which retails for nearly $20, and Salamander ripped it off within 5 minutes.

Salamander is now confined to the sock of shame, keeping his dressed wing protected from his ministrations. Salamander will only need to wear this sock for a day or two, just until he gets used to the feeling of the dressing.

With time and patience we are hopeful that Salamander will make a full recovery and return to the wild.

What it looks like:

Here's an example of such a post: https://sh.itjust.works/post/58082125

They uploaded an image and then included a URL as the body/text.

On Lemmy, it looks like an image post, with a small expando to the right of the title that you can click to show the body:

Why you should stop doing it:

  1. It makes high-quality posts look the same as low-quality ones.

I automatically downvote most image/meme submissions and posts with bad/non-descriptive titles for quality control. Linking directly to a source is how you make a high-quality submission. You can include screenshots or quotes in the body of the post.

  1. I could start clicking the expando next to the title to check if a source was provided, but there's going to be a user option to block image posts in the next lemmy update (v0.20), so that format is not good since lots of people will start to automatically block them.

  2. You can put images in the body of the posts.

Why should anyone care?

Low-quality, easy-to-digest content will dominate and drown out everything else if no one does anything to limit it. It degrades the internet and our brains.

The ’50s marked the heyday of so-called “physique” or “beefcake” magazines, some of the horniest documents in queer history. Photographers like Bob Mizer, founder of the iconic Physique Pictorial, published thousands of pages of nearly naked male bodies. Flick through the pages and you could expect to see homoerotic poses featuring sailors and cowboys, bulges straining through skimpy briefs and an occasional sprinkling of oiled-up grappling. The beefcake phenomenon wasn’t unique to the U.S. In Montreal, famed photographer Alan B. Stone turned his lens on Canada’s sexiest men, selling his beefcake prints via mail order. His risqué images were advertised in the back pages of publications like Physique Pictorial; naturally, they arrived in discreet packaging. In a world before mainstream videos of hardcore gay porn, these magazines obviously made their way into many a suburban gay spank bank, but they offered more than just eye candy.

Historian David K. Johnson chronicled the impact of this overlooked queer history in his 2019 book Buying Gay: How Physique Entrepreneurs Sparked a Movement. “I had a sense that [physique magazine] readers felt empowered by these magazines because they were mass-produced,” he tells Xtra. “That meant there were thousands of other men out there doing the same thing.” Readers could find one another through letters sections—where they could sometimes find the models too. In Grecian Guild Pictorial, Johnson says, there would be a “Grecian of the Month” pin-up pictured next to his name and street address. “It wasn’t a formal system, but it became clear to me that the biggest commodity they were selling—in addition to the images—was this access to other people. It was basically analogue social media.”

15 Years of [Waterfox] (www.waterfox.com)

This year will see Waterfox shipping a native content blocker built on Brave’s adblock library [...] For how it works in practice: by default, text ads will remain visible on our default search partner’s page - currently Startpage. The idea is that this is what will keep the lights on.

for those having trouble reading the title on clients that automatically make flairs: it's "15 Years of [Waterfox]" it's not supposed to be flair dangit

Fifteen years ago today, I posted a thread on the Overclock.net forums. I was sixteen, I had an HP Compaq TC4400 that I’d convinced my parents would “improve my school work”, and I was frustrated that Firefox didn’t have an official 64-bit build. So I compiled one myself, called it Waterfox, stuck it on SourceForge and went back to my A levels.

Within a week it had 50,000 downloads, completely unexpected. Frustratingly, being on an island in the Mediterranean meant there was no support network or anyone to turn to with regards to “what’s next”. Had I been stateside, with the infrastructure and institutional knowledge of “tech”, who knows - I might’ve had a guiding hand on how to manage something like this and work with the momentum. But alas, I would have to learn a lot of painful lessons myself.
