À cette époque, les personnes LGBTQ+ étaient souvent persécutées et discriminées par les autorités et la société en général. L’émeute de Stonewall a été un point tournant dans l’histoire des droits des LGBTQ+, marquant le début du mouvement de la fierté LGBTQ+. La première marche des fiertés aura lieu un an après en 1970 à la date anniversaire des émeutes de Stonewall.
