A new video published on social media contradicts the Department of Homeland Security’s account of why federal agents killed 37-year-old Minneapolis man Alex Pretti in broad daylight on Saturday.

The graphic video, which was uploaded by Drop Site News, shows Pretti appearing to direct traffic and film federal agents on his phone. Soon after, he appears to be pepper-sprayed and wrestled to the ground by multiple agents. About a half-dozen agents are on top of Pretti or in his immediate vicinity when he is initially shot. The gunshots continue after Pretti is on the ground.

The video, along with others recorded from different angles, refute the more than 150-word account of the shooting that DHS published on social media on Saturday afternoon. In that statement, DHS claimed that “an individual approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.”

DHS has tried to back that up by saying Pretti had a handgun on him at the time, sharing a photo of it in the same social media post. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said on Saturday that Pretti appeared to be a licensed gun owner. But the video published by Drop Site makes clear that he was not holding a weapon in the lead-up to the shooting, or when federal agents forcefully took him to the ground. Instead, he only appears to be holding his phone to record the situation.

The man fatally shot by federal officers in Minneapolis on Saturday, Jan. 24, has been identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

The shooting follows the shooting death of Renee Good by an agent on Jan. 7 in south Minneapolis.

Pretti, 37, has an address listed in south Minneapolis.

Reporters with the Minnesota Star Tribune reached two members of Pretti’s immediate family as the news was still spreading. His sister fought back sobs on the phone before hanging up.

At a news conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the man who was shot was a 37-year-old white man whose criminal record only showed some parking tickets. Law enforcement sources said Saturday their records show Pretti had no serious criminal history.

The footage of the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, said one journalist, “shows that the final act of his life was trying to help a woman who was being physically assaulted by the masked agents who would then kill him.”

Drop Site News obtained footage that appeared "to come from the direction of the woman in pink filming from the sidewalk" and showed the shooting at a closer distance than the footage taken from inside Glam Doll Donuts. 

In the video, the shooting victim, dressed in a brown coat and pants, is seen filming a federal agent with his phone. He's then seen guiding another person toward the sidewalk as the agent forcefully shoves a third person to the ground.

A person was shot to death by federal law enforcement officers on Saturday in Minneapolis for the second time in less than three weeks.

Saturday morning’s shooting comes after Renee Good, a 37-year-old American citizen, was shot and killed on 7 January by a federal immigration officer in Minneapolis after video showed her trying to drive away from a confrontation, sparking protests nationwide.

City and local police officials said in their statement that the “shooting involving federal law enforcement” occurred in the area of West 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue, and that they were “working to confirm additional details”.

All but six of the House's 213 Democrats voted this week against a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security over concerns about a lack of constraints on ICE and CBP agents. The bill passed the House but needs support from at least seven Senate Democrats, who are now under more pressure than ever to block it. "The Senate should reject the DHS funding bill next week until significant reforms are added to the bill. We need a complete overhaul," Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-R.I.) said in a post on X.
